Blaze chapter 2 (part one)

Blaze watched as over the next week everything was packed and moved untill the house was little more than an empty shell. Clo seemed to accept it, but Blaze never saw the happy little birthday girl again. They moved to a tiny apartment in the city and Blaze could see how much Clo missed her old home, she never seemed happy.

After a month of following Clo, Blaze received a call from the people who had hired her, telling her that they were putting her on a week by week rotation with another PI. Blaze was hesitant about leaving, but she knew she had her own life to lead and guarding someone day and night for a month, was starting to take it’s toll.

Three uneventful, yet horrible, at least for Clo, years passed in this way. Blaze had every second week off and used to time to do other jobs and catch up on her sleep. She still kept in touch with Cole, but one week wasn’t enough time to visit him.

It was the day that Clo went to apply for her licence that her life took at major turn for the worst. Blaze followed Clo in the morning, just like every other day. But unlike every other day, she forgot to cast a veil of unseeing. Half way there Blaze looked across the street and caught Clo’s eye. Cursing under her breath she took the next corner and tried to pretend she was just a random person off the street, but she had seen the recognition in Clo’s eyes and was mentally cursing herself for being seen.

She watched Clo walk into the licensing centre and saw her come out looking dejected. Blaze sighed and turned to Zee Zee “I guess she didn’t pass” she said

“I guess not mistress.”

Blaze walked fast on the way back, determined not to be seen, so it was her and Zee Zee who reached the unit first.

As soon as she reached the apartment door Blaze was met with the unmistakable, coppery smell of human blood and just under that a hint of something else. She took a deep breath, smelling…dew? It took her a moment to realize what it was. Hunnter blood. She scowled. Hunnters were one of the many creatures that shared the night with the vampires, they were also the vampires mortal enemies.

Blaze took another sniff. Yep, it was defiantly hunnter blood. Vampire blood, no matter what other scents it might contain, always smelt of rain, at least to Blaze. And hunnter blood smelt of dew, showing the similarities between the two races.

Reluctantly Blaze pushed the door open, she already knew what she would find. Sure enough when she opened the door and followed her nose to the kitchen she found the dead bodies of Clo’s parent’s.

“Poor girl.” She said to Zee Zee. “Now she’ll truly be alone.” Blaze turned to leave.

“Where are you going mistress.”

“I’m going to wait down the hall until Clo gets back.” Blaze replied. “Once I’ve made sure she’s ok and has someone to look after her though, I’m quitting this job.”

“What? I thought you were enjoying watching over this girl mistress? Why would you quit?” Zee Zee asked.

“Apart from this.” Blaze gave a pointed look at the bodies on the floor. “I refuse to get involved in hunnter business. They hold grudges for far to long and my connections with the Rewer city coven are too public.” She sighed. “I can’t risk it.”

Blaze and Zee Zee stood in the hall for nearly ten minutes before Clo finally came up the stairs.

“Mum! Dad! I’m home.” she yelled. “without a license.” She stopped in the lounge room and looked around. “Where are they?” she muttered under her breath. “They should be here to celebrate my failure.”

Then she walked into the kitchen.

Pure disbelief crossed her face and she stood there for a long time before falling to her knees, tears streaming down her face. “How? Why? Why me?”

She grabbed a knife that was lying on the floor and pressed it to her heart.

“I can’t do it anymore.”

Blaze had been watching the whole thing, but this was so unexpected that she was too shocked to get to Clo in time.

Clo sobbed and pushed the knife between her ribs and into her heart.

Blaze ran forward and managed to catch her before she hit the ground, but Clo was already unconscious. The hurt and pain of the past three years had built up until her soul was ready to leave, even before her body was truly dead.

Blaze could here sirens in the distance, but she knew that even if an ambulance got there right now, there would be little chance of them bringing her back. Sure they might get there in time to fix her body in time, but she was too badly injured to survive if she didn’t fight for it.

Blaze knew that Clo had to heal her soul on her own, but her body was another thing entirely. Blaze bit into her own wrist and let her blood flow onto the wound in Clos chest, than she rubbed a few drops on the girls lips. Sighing she lowered Clo’s body to the ground and got to her feet. There was no doubt that she would survive now, as long as the ambo’s did there job.

She used some of her magic to wipe her presence from the room, she didn’t want to be accused of Clo’s parents, and left. When she got to the door she turned to Zee Zee, who had refused to come in, and gestured for them to go. Zee Zee followed with out a word.

Blaze watched from across the street as first the ambulance, then the police, pulled up outside the apartment block. Soon after she saw Clo’s body rushed out on a stretcher and into the ambulance. Blaze didn’t know who had notified the authorities, but she was extremely grateful, ‘This girl.’ She thought. ‘Deserves to live.’ And with that she left, though not without reluctance.
