Bleach (ブリーチ, Burīchi?, romanized as BLEACH in Japan) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. Bleach follows the adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki after he accidentally obtains the power of a shinigami from Rukia Kuchiki. A shinigami is a Japanese death personification similar to the Grim Reaper. Gaining these abilities forces him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife.

Ichigo is a 15-year-old who attempts to cultivate a detached image, for which he keeps his eyebrows constantly furrowed. Ichigo has natural orange hair, a fact that annoys many bullies in his school, who constantly pick fights with him. Ichigo claims that he does not care what others think (both about his hair and other subjects) and seems to enjoy fighting the bullies. Ichigo is also a capable student, ranked 23rd in his school. Ichigo regularly studies and doesn't neglect his schoolwork, because he has nothing better to do at his home, Kurosaki Clinic, which doubles as the family business. It is later revealed that Ichigo works so hard only to overcome the misconceptions that many teachers tend to have about him, based on his hair color and interactions with other students. It's shown in a recent shinigami golden, that, even with his shinigami job, he is still able to pass exams, though his teacher gave him remedial exams because of his constant disappearances.

With his constant fights with bullies, many students were afraid of him, as Keigo was before. It's seen that most girls of his class, Orihime and Tatsuki's friends, feared him because of his constant fighting and appearance. Orihime herself feared him but after spending time with him, she has learned that Ichigo isn't that much of a monster she previously viewed him to be, she even described him as being very kind and having funny sisters. Rukia stated in the first movie, "he only looks scary". He seems to be liked by kids, Karin's friends, who often ask him for help, Rurichiyo stated that he was a good man, Shuu believes and feels somewhat safe with him, and Nel tends to cling to Ichigo whenever she's scared and will burst out in tears whenever something bad happens to him. Like when Ulquiorra temporarily killed Ichigo during their first fight. He has never raised his voice to his sisters, Karin and Yuzu. The same cannot be said for his father, Isshin Kurosaki.

Personality-wise, Ichigo is generally scowling, stubborn, reckless, short-tempered, blunt, occasionally confrontational (particularly to Rukia and Renji), spontaneous, determined, outspoken, strong-willed, witty, cynical, impulsive, and is extremely protective of his friends and family, particularly those who have been captured by his enemies: Rukia during the Soul Society arc, Senna in Bleach: Memories of Nobody, Orihime during the Hueco Mundo arc, and Rurichiyo during the Captain Amagai arc. He also gets extremely uncomfortable around nude or immodestly dressed women, such as Rangiku and Yoruichi. He is also a little cocky and has been known to taunt and belittle his opponents when fighting. Ichigo has a habit of misreading other people's names, such as Uryū Ishida and Yasutora Sado. It has also been a running gag in the series on how he keeps forgetting his classmate's faces and names. His friends even claim he only knows half the class. He can also go into a deep state of depression when he loses a major battle, such as with his battle with the Tenth and Fourth Espada, Yammy and Ulquiorra Schiffer. Ichigo is somewhat analytical and can catch on to things much quicker than others can, such as in the second OVA when he realized that the shinigami villain, Baishin, had merged with his zanpakuto before others like Soifon, Yoruichi, Rukia, and Renji did, and also in the Bount arc where he realized that Kisuke Urahara was the one behind the "training sessions" with the Modsouls. He is also warm and has a kind heart, though.

Ichigo has some trouble with respect and is quite rude when talking to those older than him; He tends to call some captains by their given names (Kenpachi Zaraki, Toshiro Hitsugaya, Byakuya Kuchiki) despite verbal protests from the latter two and almost never uses any honorifics. But he does treat some people with respect: (Yoruichi Shihōin, Kisuke Urahara, Jūshirō Ukitake, Rangiku Matsumoto, Soifon). He calls Captain Yamamoto :"gramps". The same is true with shinigami "royalty", such as Shuu and Rurichiyo.

Ichigo hasn't shown any romantic type feelings to any females in the series except for Senna. This is likely due to the fact that he and Senna spent quality time together, and Ichigo bought a ribbon for her. This apparently made the two very close. Another sign of his dedication to her was when he refused to give up on her after she was captured. Ichigo also seemed very depressed after she "died". There is also a strong bond between him and Rukia, and their love-hate relationship has romantic potential. Orihime is in love with Ichigo, but he has yet to show outward signs of sharing similar feelings, and has only shown protective feelings for her.

Kurosaki Ichigo looks just like any average 15 year old teenager with only one big difference; he can see ghosts/spirits. Rukia Kuchiki, a Shinigami (Soul Reaper) is out on a mission to find an evil spirit called a Hollow. The Hollow’s target is none other than Ichigo. Rukia and Ichigo confront each other for the first time. Ichigo’s family gets endangered by the Hollow and the only way to stop it was for Rukia, who was injured, to transfer her Shinigami powers to Ichigo who had a strong spiritual force. The concurrence of Rukia and Ichigo leads to many adventures, with a lot of humor along the way. Ichigo helps Rukia fight off Hollows and keep the town safe. The story continues with many twists and turns with action, adventure and comedy.
