Chapter 31: No Matter What Happens, I'll Protect You

♢Noel♢

I had been through my Writing 101 and Survey of British Lit I. I got my assignments for both of my classes so far. I still had my Bio class to go to. It was the same one that was at 8 in the morning, which to be honest I may switch it because I kind of don’t like having to wait till 10 in the morning to start classes when I’m already up by 6:30. I hated it. Then I had my art class. That went from 3-5. It was a lesser art class. One that was technically a foundations course, but instead of cramming it all in a year it was spread out through 4 years and they spent more time on certain projects.

‘I hate this.’ I thought running my hand through my hair as I walked to my bio class after leaving lunch. ‘Can this week be over with already and we just go to your house. I think I would rather deal with the judgment from your parents then with how much pain is in my heart right now.’

“I can tell your really tense and you obviously didn’t sleep well. I’m so sorry. If it weren’t for my stupid idea you wouldn’t be feeling like this.” Nori has been apologizing to me all day. He’s even tried to make me laugh it just wasn’t working.

I was sure that I probably upset Elena by not replying to her text, I just didn’t know what to say. “At least you have your art class after Bio. You did some really good drawings last night. You should do well in your class.” Nori encouraged.

‘I just wish she would at least give me a chance. It’s not like I want to be attached to her hip or anything. I…I just…’ I trailed off as I sat down and wrote down some stuff that the teacher said, but it was hard for me to concentrate.

“You want to be able to be in the same room with her and be comfortable. You also want to be able to protect her.” Nori finished.

‘Yeah…’ I sighed a little.

“But like I told you last night. It’s up to her to make a move. You’ve done what you could and you already told me you don’t want to push her. You’re a very kind and respectful. As much as it hurts, just let things play out. She said she wants to hang out so that’s a plus. You never know what’ll happen.” Nori tried to encourage me and I couldn’t help but smile a bit.

‘Thank you Nori.’ I closed my note book with class being over and put everything back in my bag and then headed to my art class. It was a two-hour class, but I feel like it’ll be worth it.

The class was drawing and painting. My professor was really laid back but also straight to the point with what he was hoping for us to achieve during this semester and what exactly we would be doing for a final. The final would be an art show. But in order to get there we had to start with the basics. So it was on to what my professor called mowing the lawn. Which was just drawing a bunch of lines. At different densities. Thankfully we didn’t get any homework for the class. Well we did. It was to make 5X5” squares of different patterns using straight lines for two and organic even pressured lines. That was more difficult but we had an hour and a half after the lesson. I was able to crank them out because this was pretty much a repeat of my senior year of high school. Because I was a weird one and did all my art classes backwards in high school. It was a fun learning experience to do it that way that’s for sure.

“So what are your plans? Are you going to just head back to your room? Go get dinner? Or are you going to let Elena know your done for the day?”

‘I’m not really hungry right now. I think I’m just going to go to the library.’ I answered and headed to the library that was across the street from my studio.

I pulled out my cell phone and licked on the read message from Elena and replied to it letting her know that I was heading to the library and which one since there were two on campus. I told her I would be in one of the study rooms upstairs. I pick the one on the far end of the four that were on the first wall right after you got up to the second floor. I pulled out my notebooks and then my Bio. I had it opened up to the page that I needed it to be so I could work on the problems that were given as homework. But first I went into my bag and pulled out my headphones. Plugged them into my iPod. I put one of the ear pieces over my ear as I rested the other one behind my left ear and I started cranking out my outline for my first paper and then I went to reading for my brit lit class.

I looked up when the door clicked and Elena walked in. I looked back down at my book and continued reading. “Hey.” I greeted quietly as Panic at the Disco played in my right ear.

“Hi.” She answered closing the door behind her and setting her bag down.

I continued reading. I was a fast reader so the 80 pages that I had to I was going to get done in about 20 more minuets. Then it was just jotting down notes as I read. I could feel the awkwardness in the room between us. I wanted to go back to the peaceful feeling that we had. But Nori told me to keep quiet about everything and I didn’t know how I really feel about it. A part of me wants to reach over the table and kiss her again and try to make her change her mind that way, but at the same time I knew that would probably make things ten times worse and she would probably hate me for the rest of her life and never want to see me or talk to me again. I don’t want to experience seeing if other girls liked me or not. Because of Nori even though it’s so soon in I realized just how much I really do like her. I never said that we had to rush into anything. Even just studying together would be enough till she was comfortable.

“Um…” I looked up at Elena when she said that.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“I…” She started and I put my right hand up as I pulled my head phones off and put them around my neck.

“Do you hear that?” I asked her? There was a screaming. But it was the kind of screaming that I heard from redeads in Legend of Zelda.

‘Nori.’ We switched as we stood up.

“Come on.” I said to Elena and grabbed her wrist before she could protest and I teleported us out of the room and onto the top of the building. Before Elena could fall I wrapped one arm around her waist.

“Thank you.” Her face flushed lightly. “But how did Noel hear a scream even with head phones on?” She asked and I let her stand on her own two feet.

I put the tip of my thumb and my pointer finger just into my mouth and whistled. It was about the pitch of a dog whistle. I knew that Yun would be able to hear it since he’s been chilling out in the room all day. “Noel’s always been sensitive to the other side.” I looked down at her. “So to be honest he’s a few steps ahead of you in the bonding process.” I looked forward. “Now listen.”

The scream was clear as day and it was coming from close to the dorm. “It’s terrible.” She whispered.

“It’s called a screamer, ironically. The it screams it paralyzes its prey. Eevie’s the best one to go against a screamer because of her abilities to kill things from the inside out.” I looked down at her.

“Noel and I are going to give you two the opening you’ll need for Eevie to locate the hearts and take it out.” Once again I didn’t give her time to respond before I placed a hand on her shoulder and teleported us to close to the screamer. “Don’t get us killed. No pressure.” I said and then teleported right next to the screamer who was now holding a paralyzed human girl. “Pst…what cha doin?” I asked it with my hands behind my back and it swung an arm and I jumped out of the way. “NOW YUN!” I yelled and Yun transformed into his full sized human from his little cotton form that was floating above the screamer and he landed with both feet right on it’s head.

I jumped in and snatched the human girl out of it’s arms and got her away from the demon. Then I got back to the screamer as fast as I left. “Yun transform.” I called and he transformed into the dual blades. Yun wouldn’t be effected by the screams in the weapon form so he was safe. Where Eevie and Elena are and if they are the correct distance away from it is another story.

I kept dodging out of it’s way of it’s swipes and blocking the ones that got close to hitting me. I saw the thing lean forward with a jolt. It meant that Eevie must have found one of it’s hearts. It picked up it’s head and screamed and I felt my muscles freeze.

“Master Nori!” Yun yelled.

‘Nori we have to switch.’ Noel told me. I didn’t want to put him in harms way and I didn’t know if switching would break the paralyzing. But I guess there was only one way to find out.

“Okay.” I agreed and Noel jumped in front of me and I felt myself fall back. My muscles came back into my control. When Noel came into control he was able to drop tuck and roll out of the way from the swing of the screamer.

It worked, it actually worked. My muscles still felt a bit tight but the switch broke it. Noel was able to block the on coming attacks with Yun, though he got pushed back a bit every time it hit the blades. The high pitched scream ran through our ears once more and now Noel couldn’t move.

“Again.” I called out and we switched. My muscles felt stiff but I was able to move once more and I teleported out of the way.

It made it difficult to move or even go that far with teleporting for that mater. The screamers hearts were much separated through out it’s body and they were very thick. Finding them took time and then being able to crush them was another challenge. And if you didn’t move fast enough it could start to rebuild its damaged hearts. That time span I didn’t know for sure. I was never told. Whenever my blades would hit its body it was like a very thick syrup. Difficult to cut through and I had to put a lot of strength into getting the blade through. Once I got it through though it screamed once more and we were in a very dangerous range.

The screamer went to take us in it’s arms when it lurched forward once more and then it quickly turned to where Eevie was standing. It did jumped again. That was four, but it didn’t fall, it didn’t crumble into dust. It continued towards her. Noel and I switched once more. Like me he was stiff, but he pushed past it. I’m sure that it was pure adrenalin that was pushing him forward and sprinting to get past the screamer and in between Eevie and the demon. Noel was bringing Yun up to cross the blades in front of him when it screamed again. The blades weren’t completely in front of him. We started to switch and it brought it’s arm up and five nails came screeching forward and stabbed Noel in stomach. It cancelled out the switch and I felt myself thrown back.

“NOEL!” I screamed terrified. Noel was screaming in pain in our head as he was lifted into the air and our body slid further down its nails and then thrown.

Yun glowed in front of us and then the light launched behind us. Yun went back to his full sized human forma and caught us before we hit the ground. How much we were able to switch before that happened though got rid of the full paralyzing feature. I could feel Noel’s body shaking, hot tears running down hit cheeks as he was finally able to cry in pain.

But something that I didn’t expect. I could feel his body healing. It was healing at the rate mine did from my families healing ability. “Noel!” Eevie screamed. She must have killed the screamer.

“It hurts.” Noel choked out as he clutched onto Yun’s jacket and was shaking violently in his arms.

“I know it hurts, I know.” Yun said trying to stay calm and gently laid Noel down.

Yun pulled Noel’s blood stained shirt up to see the damage and a look of shock over came his face. Which ultimately confirmed the feeling I was getting in my own stomach. Precisely where the five holes were located on him and then entry and exit wounds were. This is what it felt like getting injured during a switch. It was equally shared. Or was it because we were so close that the feelings whenever the other was injured it was shared?

Either way whenever the pain would subside I’ll be able to switch and try to get us back to the room so we could get a change of clothes for Noel. Then we would have to get back to the library.
