Chapter Thirty-Five: I Just...

-Jason-

I couldn’t believe we just did that. What was happening to me? Just a few days ago I was in the lab again and was about to die from drowning in a tank of water because I couldn’t swim. What was wrong with me? Well that was a stupid question to ask myself, it’s more what isn’t wrong with me?

I grabbed my bag and went out into the hall and waited by the girls locker room waiting for Elijah to come out. I remembered that she brought her hair dryer with her so that she could dry her hair before we went outside. ‘I know that my parents had my records now and they could figure out exactly what was done to me, but still…it didn’t help that I wasn’t going to be graduating with El. El was accepted to a college and is going away after the summer. I didn’t know what to do anymore. I was just going through so much turmoil that I didn’t know what was going on with me.' I thought.

“Jason? Hello…” Elijah’s voice snapped me back to reality. “You alright?” She asked

“Yea I’m fine. Sorry I was just lost in thought was all.” I answered taking her bag from her and resting it on the same shoulder as my bag. “We did what I wanted to do today so what do you want to do?” I asked her trying to make sure that she didn’t ask me what I was thinking about.

“Um…well I would like to go see a movie that just came out.” She stated.

“Alright, I don’t see why we can’t do that. I think that it’s a lot safer for us to go out and actually be together in public since your father caught the scientists that were experimenting on me.” I stated.

“That is true. In that case did you want to go out to eat before we go to the movie?” She offered.

“Um…w-we can, I’ve never gone out to eat from what I can remember.” I answered rubbing the back of my head feeling my cheeks heat up a little bit.

“I know a place where we can go.” She laughed taking my hand and weaving her fingers through mine.

“Okay, what should I do then?” I asked still a bit confused.

“I think that if you ask your mother and father they would be happy to help.” She smiled.

“Oh right, Elijah I heard some kids from our class talking about prom, what is it exactly?” I asked her a bit confused.

“Prom is a dace where juniors and seniors get dressed up and go to a dance for pretty much once last fling together to have a good time before graduation. The guys where suits and ties and the girls where beautiful dresses with their hair all done up and make up plastered on their faces. I’ve never been really interested in going to prom really.” She answered.

“Well, did you want to go? We could go together and that would give me an excuse to see you all dressed up.” I smiled down at her.

She bumped into me and laughed a little. “I’ll think about it.” She told me, “The date of the prom is June 2nd so I have a little bit of time still before tickets are done being sold.”

“I would be honored to take you if you want to go. That would also give me mom an excuse to take a whole bunch of pictures and have fun with helping me get dressed up.” I smiled at the thought of seeing my mother smile and having fun.

I missed years of being with my parents. I just wish I knew what was going to happen now that I didn’t have to worry about the scientists again.

“I’ll think about it. I’m sure that you will look great in a suit.” El smiled up at me as we stopped at her house.

“So I’ll see you at six then?” I asked her picking a time for us to go and get dinner.

“Sounds good.” She smiled and got up onto her tiptoes and kissed me. Lightly before heading inside, “See you at six.” She winked at me as she took her bag from me and closed the door behind her.

I smiled a bit at the door and then turned around and walked to my house. The car was gone when I got to the house. Just to make sure I went to the garage and opened the door just to make sure. When I opened the door the car wasn’t in there but there was something that was covered up over in the corner. I set my bag down and walked over to it. Pulling off the cover, it was a motorcycle.

“Oh wow, I didn’t know my parents had one of these.” I muttered to myself walking around it.

I sat down on it. It was a nice bike. I would probably want something more like one of the new Suzuki’s that I see occasionally when I would go to the store with my parents. It would be nice to learn how to drive at least a motorcycle. Maybe I can ask my parents about it later.

I got up off the motorcycle and covered it back up and then walked out of the garage and closed the door behind me. When I picked up my bag my parents car pulled into the driveway. I smiled and waved at them.

“You’re home early.” I said walking over to the car after my mom got out of the car.

“We know, we figured that we should come home early so that we could talk.” My dad said.

I gave my mom a hug and looked at my dad confused. “What is it that you want to talk about?” I asked letting go of my mother.

“I think that this is something that we should probably discuss inside the house.” My mom said.

“What’s going on?” I asked a bit concerned as we walked into the house.

“Sit down son.” My dad said and I did what I was told.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“We were able to look at your records from that place. That serum that they gave to was applied after they injected an animals DNA right?” My dad started.

“Yea, but what is this about?” I asked. “If you’re wondering how many times I was given it. I think I was given it three times. Once before the cat DNA was injected into me, then after the cat DNA was injected and after the fish DNA was injected into me.” I answered.

“Has anything strange happened?” My dad asked.

“I learned how to swim today. And I can breath underwater. These slits showed up behind my ears. I think that they are gills.” I said and my mom made me move my head to the side and she move my hair out of the way so that she could see.

It felt strange when she ran her fingers across them. “Has anything else happened?” mom asked.

“Not that I’ve noticed.” I answered.

“That serum that they gave you is going to start effecting the DNA that was injected into with large doses. Other then the doses from the cat DNA and the fish DNA the only other one that had a high dose was a raven’s DNA.” My dad explained.

“Please don’t say I’m going to be sprouting wings next.” I felt my voice cracked a bit as I gave a worried expression on my face.

“I don’t know son. I’m sorry.” He said.

“Why…” I muttered running my fingers through my hair. “Why can’t I be normal? I just want to be normal. I don’t want this. I just want to be human. I don’t want to be part cat, fish, and bird.” I said my voice still cracking. “Isn’t there anything that you can do?” I begged my parents.

“All we can do is keep it an eye on you and hopefully figure out a way to get you back to being human.” My mom said putting her hands on my shoulders and looking me in the eyes.

I nodded and smiled a little. “Now here comes the part that you’re probably not going to like.” My dad sighed I looked up at him. “We’re going to have to take you to the lab and run some tests so that we can try to figure out how to remove the DNA’s from your own.”

My heart felt like it stopped and I felt myself start to shake. The fact that I had to go back to a lab, I didn’t know what to think.

“Jay, sweetie, it’s going to be okay. We’re going to be there with you. We’re going to be the one’s working with you, and you’re coming home with us every night. We promise that nothing bad is going to happen to you.” My mom said trying to calm me down.

“When do we have to go?” I asked still shaking.

“We should head back there soon. The sooner we can start conducting the tests the faster we can get you back to being human son.” My dad answered.

“But, El and I were going to go to dinner and the movies tonight.” I said.

“I’m sorry son. You two can do that another time.” Dad told me.

“But, mom…” I looked at her for support and she shook her head.

“I’m sorry son. It would be easier to get this done so that you can focus on your school work instead of being in the lab with us running tests.” My mom answered with a bit of sadness in her eyes.

I looked down at my lap and took a deep breath in. “I understand. Just let me call El and let her know.” I said standing up and grabbing my bag.

“We’ll leave in a half an hour so that you two can talk.” Mom said.

I nodded and went up to my room to drop off my bag. I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and dialed El’s cell number and waited for her to pick up.
