Funimation Adds Heroic Age Anime

The North American distributor Funimation has announced that it has licensed the Heroic Age television anime series from the Japanese media company Kodansha. Tow Ubukata (Fafner, Le Chevalier D'Eon, Mardock Scramble) created this science-fiction story about the struggle of the Iron Tribe — humanity — against the technologically advanced Silver Tribe that has ruled space ever since the ancient Gold Tribe disappeared. A man named Age (Hiroshi Yazaki) and princess named Deianeira (Yui Ishikawa) are the answers to Gold Tribe's prophecies that bind all the races.

Funimation is streaming a trailer of the anime on a new official English website. Fafner producer Takashi Noto and Fafner episode director Toshimasa Suzuki oversaw the animators at Xebec on this 26-episode series last year. Funimation plans to release the series on DVD in 2009.

Witchblade Creator Michael Turner Dies

Michael Turner, one of the creators of the American comic Witchblade which was the source of the Witchblade anime series and Witchblade: Takeru manga, passed away on June 27. He was 37. He was diagnosed with bone cancer eight years ago.

The Witchblade comic has been published by Image Comics' Top Cow Productions since 1995. In 2004, Japan's Gonzo studio announced plans to adapt it into a 24-episode television series, which was then aired in Japan. FUNimation Entertainment licensed the anime for North American distribution. Separately, Top Cow also sold the rights for a Witchblade manga. Veteran screenwriter Yasuko Kobayashi, who co-wrote the scripts for the anime series, created the spin-off story for the manga. Witchblade: Takeru was serialized in Akita Shoten's Champion RED magazine and exported back to the United States in two separate editions: as a set of flipped, full-color 32-page comics from Top Cow, and as more traditional unflipped manga-style volumes from Bandai Entertainment.

"Medal of Honor" Music Used in Political Ad

The music of the following video may sound fairly eerie to gamers who've played Metal of Honor: European Assault:

...but in a political ad? All affliations aside, seems odd, doesn't it?

This recent development has come into major dispute since the composer of the music is, in fact, a supporter of the Democratic candidate Barak Obama. Christopher Lennertz, the composer, has released statements that state although the McCain Campaign did nothing illegal and that he respects the senator for his service to our country, he is disappointed that he was never consulted over the use of his musical score. There was a mix-up as to who controlled the rights to the music, which resulted in the music landing in the commerical. It should also be noted that although Mr. Lennertz wrote the music, he does not specifically own the ownership of the piece.

I find this interesting, as I am an American citizen of voting age. It seems that the campaign was trying to appeal to multiple audiences at once (which makes sense), though unintentionally created a major blunder. Fact-checkers are human and can make mistakes such as this, though I am sure some people are outraged that an error of this magnitude has accidently slipped by. It's sort of funny, as I am sure Mr. Lennertz would not have raised as much of a fuss if it was Senator Obama's advertisements using his music, but I digress...

Should music like this be used as part of a political advertisement campaign, no matter the party affiliation, or is this wrongful? We aren't talking about things like advertising liquor or cigarettes, but trying to be personable to a wider outreach of voters. With all of the unnecessary mud-slinging that has been going on, shouldn't enough be enough?

Thanks, SomeGuy, for the tip.

Bar Requests 10 Year Disbarment for Jack Thompson

After finding him responsible for 27 separate instances of professional misconduct, the Florida Bar has requested that controversial Miami attorney and anti-gaming activist Jack Thompson be disbarred for 10 years, reports GamePolitics.

Thompson wrote a "lengthy objection" in response to the request, but after being barred from reading it aloud, Thompson reportedly "stormed out of the hearing." Judge Dava Tunis did allow Thompson to submit his response to the court record, however.

News of the Florida Bar's request comes only a month and a half after the Florida Supreme Court forbade Thompson from representing himself in any further filings with the court.

VIZ Sets Up Hollywood Office

Following examples from others like Madhouse and Aniplex, Viz is opening up an office in Los Angeles. The goal is to promote Viz productions within the eyes of the American silver screen big wigs. The fact that projects such as Drgonball Z and the American comic book-based movies exist are enough for anime companies to want to pitch titles to Hollywood screenwriters and directors.

Holy Crap, A Japanese Execution!

Photograph of Miyazaki in 1989 after arrest.

Anyone who has been an "otaku" long enough to know that the word is inheritedly negative should be at least satisfied with this bit of news: the man convicted as the Otaku Murderer was finally executed on Tuesday.

Tsutomu Miyazaki (no relation to Hayao and Goro) was arrested back in 1989 after assaulting a six-year-old girl whicle trying to take graphically explicit pictures. When the police searched his home, they found 5763 videotapes, many of which were violent, pornographic and of the animated sort. They also found evidence that he murdered four girls ages 4-7 during 1988 and 1989. The trial lasted from 1990 to 1997, in which the end result was a death sentence. Both the Tokyo High Court and the Japanese Supreme Court held the rulings.

Before Miyazaki's creepy uncovering, the Japanese had already been using the word "otaku" as a way to describe introverted and obsessive fans of anything applicable. It was only after the case did the term become synonomous with otaku of the anime/manga variety, with the help from an essay about the case written by Akio Nakamori. The word "otaku", as described here is not a very acceptable term to call one's self at all if speaking Japanese. Since the word in English does not have the same negative connotations, it is harder for us to understand, yet "otaku" ultimately has the same effect as calling someone a "dork", "geek" or "nerd" here (casual overusage aside).
