Riddles for a Challenge

Riddle 1:
Darker than the darkest night
Does not exist in it's own right
The poor have it in abundance
The rich don't want it by circumstance
If you eat this then very soon
Something will be lost that is not picayune.

What am I?

Riddle 2:
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Nolan, two Americans, went on a trip to the Italian city of Venice. Three days after they arrive, an American man scanning the New York Times saw the following headline: "Local man, 45, dies in freak drowning accident." Peter Nolan drowned in the rivers of Venice. Immediately, the man called the authorities and said, "Arrest Mrs. Nolan in the drowning death of her late husband as soon as she returns from Venice."

Who is this man?
How did he know Mrs. Nolan killed her husband?

Riddle 3:
I am tasted through water and smelled through fire
I heal most all with tradeoffs in body and mind.
From the high of society to the slums of the streets
I am one in a million yet in name the same kind.
