Double Gauge

Plot: At first glance, weakling Alz and his companion, Miradol, don't look like a very heroic team. But together, the pharmacist team fights terrifying disease-causing monsters called "Gifts". (High marks for creativity -- A)

Characters: Odd, fun, but a bit flat. (B+)

Artwork: Takes some getting used to. (B)

Objectionable Content: Blood, semi-horror elements

Other: A unique premise, but a bit rough around the edges. Has potential to be good, but it's taken some wrong turns.

Overall Score: B+

Recommendation: 2/5

Zoids: Chaotic Century

Plot: On the planet Zi, large mechanized lifeforms called "Zoids" are used by humans as tools -- and more often as weapons in this time of war.

An adventurous boy named Van is exploring some old ruins when he finds an "organoid" he names Zeke and a young woman named Fiona in two capsules. Fiona, who has very little of her memory, is looking for something called "Zoid Eve", and Van partners with Zeke and an old Shield Liger to help her. (B)

Characters: Some have more depth than others (B+)

Art & Animation: A-

Voice Acting: B-

Music: B

Objectionable Content: Mild

Other: Chaotic Century has a lot more to it than New Century Zero, and the manga drives that home even more in a more compact form.

Overall Score: B

Recommendation: 2.5/5

Plot: On the planet Zi, large mechanized lifeforms called "Zoids" are used by humans as tools, and more often as weapons.

Bit Cloud is a junk dealer who comes upon an unusual Zoid belonging to one of the large tournament league teams. No one on the Blitz team had been able to pilot the Liger Zero. But Bit is able to form a partnership with the Zoid and becomes part of the Blitz team. (C+)

Characters: These guys were fairly flat. (C)

Art & Animation: B+

Voice Acting: B-

Music: I don't recall it being good or bad, so it must have been okay. (B-)

Objectionable Content: Mild

Other: Zoids: New Century Zero, as it's called in Japan, is the first Zoids series to air State-side, but takes place later in the story's chronology. The story doesn't have much substance to speak of, but some of the episodes' stories stand out on their own.

The CG is the best in this season and in Chaotic Century.

Overall Score: C+

Recommendation: 2/5

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

Plot: When Sorata takes in one stray cat too many, he is forced to move into his high school's "Sakura Hall" -- a dorm full of problem kids eccentric geniuses. The newest addition at Sakurasou is a girl named Mashiro, a manga artist who can't even do simple things like getting dressed by herself. Sorata is put in charge of taking care of her. (B-)

Characters: Definitely..unique. (A-)

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A

Music: B

Objectionable Content: Sexual innuendo/situations, profanity

Other: Because of high praise and the clips I saw in AMVs, I wanted to give this anime a shot. And I would have liked it better if there wasn't SO MUCH (negative) FAN SERVICE. But I pretty much gave it up when, rather than focusing on progressing the story, more fan service characters and sexual elements kept being brought into play. (I mean, really, was it necessary to have one of the Sakurasou residents sleeping around with older women and visiting love hotels? That really turned me off, and it's a big blow against my recommending this anime.)

Overall Score: B+

Recommendation: 1.5/5 (stopped watching)

World Embryo

Plot: When Riku Amami gets a message on his cell phone from a relative he'd thought was dead, he goes to find her and stumbles into the dangerous battle between an organization called F.L.A.G. and the monsters called Kanshu. While trying to run from the Kanshu, Riku finds a strange cocoon that winds up saving his life. But the life form that hatches from it will turn his life upside-down... (A)

Characters: A-

Artwork: A-

Objectionable Content: Blood/gore, profanity, suggestive themes

Other: Has an extremely good building plot, but I stopped reading this one because of the gore. Therefore, I'm taking points off on the recommendation.
