Hatching!

"Hurry. The man you live with is coming after you, he is close by," the same woman from the day before told me as she knelt at my side.

She closed her eyes, as if she was sensing something. Suddenly, she grabbed my arm and rushed through the forest, pulling me behind her. We came to a small cave and she led me inside.

I heard cracking coming from the rock in my arms. I looked and there was a small crack on the rock's outerlayer. So it wasn't a rock at all, but an egg, and it was hatching! A smile touched my lips as I sat down and held the shell on top of my crossed legs. The woman stood watch over me.

Ever so slowly, the creature that was inside pushed its head out of an opening, cracking the egg down the side. I helped tear the shell from the little creature. There sitting in my lap was a dragon. A dragon! No one would ever believe me. I was holding a dragon! I had been told there was no left.

I wanted to squeal in delight, but I controlled myself. The little dragon was so cute. It had the most unique red shades lining its body. "You're like a little ruby," I noted.

The dragon bounced its head up and down in joy. "So, you like that name do you? Ok then, Ruby it is!"

"Shh," the woman ordered. "There are people out looking for you."

I set the dragon down and stood by the woman's side. "Who is it?"

"One of them being the man you live with," she answered, her eyes never leaving the mouth of the cave.

"Not any more," I shook my head.

There was a noise at the mouth of the cave. The woman grabbed me and pressed me into the shadows, all I could do was wait. Wait for the woman to make the next move, as I had no idea what I was doing, and she clearly did. I put all my trust in this stranger.
