"Make something every day and change your life!" -Noah Scalin

The only rule is: there are no rules!

Most Important: Don't stress out. Remember, this about taking little steps. When doing your daily project, focus on the current day and don't think about tomorrow, next week, or next month. Big projects can be incredibly daunting, but you'll be amazed at what you can do when you break them down into a series of tiny, manageable pieces.

The key to a successful daily project is deciding on a subject or medium that you will enjoy exploring for a year.

Keep in mind that a simpler idea will go a lot farther than a complicated on. If you choose a consistent subject matter (skulls, stars, smiley faces, chihuahuas, etc.), pick something you already like. You probably have plenty examples of it in your environment to inspire you, and you'll be less likely to get tired of it before a year is over.

and lastly, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT DOCUMENT!!!!! take pictures/video of not only the finished product. maybe take some of you in the process of making the project. and if it is something that will change over time (snow melting, food rotting), document that as well.

~-~-I will post the day's prompt early in the morning. when i finish my project, i will upload the documentation. in the evening i will post tomorrow's prompt to give you a head's up with the spoiler alert. ~-~-

all prompts and the above introduction rules are from the book A Daily Creativity Journal 365 Make Something Every Day And Change Your Life! by Noah Scalin

DAY 20

PROMPT: buy or make some clay (see instructions below) and then use it like you never have before.

SUPPLIES: 4 cups flour; 1 cup salt; 1 1/2 cup water; measuring cups; mixing bowls; cookie sheet; oven; paint or other decorating materials; food coloring(optional)

DIRECTIONS: 1-put four cups of flour in a large mixing bowl.
2-mix in one cup of salt.
3-slowly add 1 1/2 cups of water (add more if the dough is too dry and crumbly). 4-knead with your hands until smooth.
5-create things that are under 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) thick or they won't dry properly.
6-bake on a cookie sheet at 300 degrees Farenhite (150 degrees celcius) for 30-60 minutes to harden. (just don't let it get brown).

TIPS: if you want colored clay, you can add food coloring tot he water before mixing it with the flour, or you can pull off chunks of finished clay and mix in a small amount of coloring (although be aware that it may stain your hands).
you can paint or decorate the end result with most common art materials and even seal it with a varnish.
this clay is not water resistant, so it may degrade over time if it is not fully sealed after it is baked, and very wet paints may cause it to soften.
keep the unused clay in a closed container, and it will stay soft for a few days.

i had a blast with this prompt. my friend ashley gave me a pack of colored clay last xmas. so i took it to work with me with the plan to make as many little kitties as possible. a kitty army. i made the yellow one, when nicole suggested we make nyan cat. AWESOME! so we mixed up the colors we could need, then we each made a nyan cat. when we were done, i altered my yellow kitty to be a pikachu cat. when i got home i poked a hole in them, and placed them in the oven to bake. and now i have two new awesome key chains.

DAY 21 PROMPT: write a ten-word love story. Bonus: illustrate it!

DAY 19

PROMPT: create something that floats on water. (it doesn't have to be a boat.)

i drove sammie nuts with the tape. he loves to eat tape. so he was glues to my side the entire time i was taping the toothpicks together.

DAY 18

PROMPT: work with things you find in your car (or a friend's car if you don't have one).

i realize some people may have no access to anyone's car if they don't have one. if so, you could use a toy car or put a car in your drawing.

awhile back i spilled mineral spirits in my trunk and i put a box of baking soda (powder?) in my trunk to help get rid of the smell. though my car does have a faint yuck odor to it. but i also have a giant stuffed lion in my trunk, which serves as my pillow when i nap in my car. so i decided to try my hand at making rafiki's painting of baby simba (the one in his tree) with the powder.

DAY 19 PROMPT: create something that floats on water. (it doesn't have to be a boat.)

DAY 17

PROMPT: make something inspired by and/or that goes over an eye (yours or someone else's).

i had no idea what to make for today, when suddenly i remember that I WEAR GLASSES! duh. i'm so stupid sometimes. so i traced my glasses, drew kitty eyes, then taped them over my glasses. i didn't want to take a picture of myself, so my lovely bear Caesar that i got for valentine's day modeled for me.

DAY 18 PROMPT: work with things you find in your car (or a friend's car if you don't have one).

DAY 16

PROMPT: make a unique print by cutting up a potato or sponge, and then use it to stamp on a material of your choice.

fuko chan has inspired me by doing a star every day. so i bought a sponge before work yesterday, then hacked out a shooting star. then drew a kitty sitting on a hill, making a wish on a shooting star.

DAY 17 PROMPT: make something inspired by and/or that goes over an eye (yours or someone else's).
