i did shrink it down evenly as best i could. but it was a rectangle already. and i hate the scanner now and i hate the freaking resizing crap!!

yeah, it looks like you scanned it in, and shrunk it down only horizontally. If you shrink it down equally horizontally & vertically, it should look smoother.
