The Soul Collector

[My entry for the "Halloween Writer's Jam". Apologies if there are any mistakes, English isn't my native language. Here's hoping someone will find it remotely scary.]

Blood veins dyed the evening ground,
The sky seemed fastened to the floor,
She heard a simple, subtle sound,
A knocking at the door...

That's how it started; so she paused
To hide her fear, oh but alas,
She looked around, and there it was,
The face pressed by the glass...

She clutched her hands and backed away,
"What do you want to prove?"
But the man did not obey,
The silhouette now moved...

Slowly creeping through the wall
Now all was made so clear,
The girl knew her soul would fall,
She knew her end was near...

"There is nothing I must prove,
I'm just taking what you stole."

Now he took another move,
"I'll be tearing out your soul"...

She seemed baffled and depressed,
By the sudden sense of heat,
His hand now sank in her chest,
And the girl fell to his feet...

"You've a very painful debt
So, make haste and let us start"

Spoke the ghostly silhouette.
And her chest was torn apart...

"Silly girl, your life has ended"
He now uttered to himself,
In agony she comprehended:
"The soul is ripping from myself!"

"Oh yes, this soul is fine!"
Spoke the man with ghostly mask,
But the girl's eyes seemed to ask,
"Will you please return what's mine?..."

Robbed of her soul so dear,
Still feeling burned inside
She understood it all too clear
"This pain will not subside..."

Feeling choked, the girl was crying,
She felt severed, full of holes,
"What a painful way of dying."
Said the man collecting souls...

Now she felt so torn apart...
He left the girl behind still knowing
She would hold that sense of burning
Forever in her heart.

[I'm aware that this doesn't go with the theme of my World, but please save the torches and pitchforks until after the competition :)]

Some Crazy Summaries

( ... by crazy I mean weird, maybe even fun summaries; you decide!) You know all those manga sites that post really dull and misleading manga summaries? They're sometimes misleading because it's impossible to find a person that has read a t...

Openings, Endings and Other Stuff 2

Endings.. uh touchy subject for me to be honest. I usually change the channel or skip whenever I have the chance, unless the ending has cought my eye for some reason (which is usually the music). But don't be as judgmental as me and don't skip end...

Let's Talk Immersion!

Anime and manga can act just like video games when talking about immersion. Now let's refer to anime first. If the story is told beautifully, if the characters are lovable, deep or just plain cute then chances are that anime will suck you right in.

Immersion? The heck is that...?

First let's define that little word in the title... immersion. (I'm not implying that you don't know what it means, just that the term can mean different things, depending on the person). You know that idle Saturday when you flick the TV channels and you find nothing and then suddenly... the remote runs out of batteries? Then you realize you're stuck on an anime channel, woe is you! But anime doesn't interest you that much... or so you think at first. You decide to give it a try and suddenly you get involved with the story, the characters are really enjoyable to watch and hey, before you know it, the episode is over and you can't believe time has passed so fast. This is what I mean by immersion - when you're so involved with an anime that you don't perceive time passing, you're happy to live alongside characters, you're happy if the characters are happy, you forget that pot roast in the oven...

The anime that made me a rabid fan (a little ancient history)

My first experience with the feeling of immersion was Death Note. I started watching it out of pure curiosity during my homework time and said to myself "Just one episode can't rob that much time". Boy oh boy was I wrong. The first episode sucked me right into the story, the choir songs, the dark mood made me forget that there was a real world outside. The graphics (is that what you call them?) look amazing compared to most anime these days, the people look human so the contrast with Shinigamis is just mind blowing. The end of the first episode left my jaw dropped on my keyboard and I immediately started watching the second episode.

I was still holding the pen with which I was supposed to write my homework and a little gnome inside my brain told me to shut off the PC and do some work. But I just shushed that damn annoying fellow, threw my papers aside and enjoyed the anime. I wanted to know more about my new hero, Light, about the enigmatic L, about what's to come. They're last lines in episode 2 gave me goosebumps (if you don't know them, hurry up and see it or else a piano will hit you. No, I'm not kidding >_>)

For a few hours of that day I had forgotten about my exams, about the world around me, for a few moments I was part of the Death Note universe and it was disappointing to return to my world after it ended.

And just to give you more proof of just how immersive the Death Note anime was for me, allow me to say that I used to wake up during weekends at 8AM in order to see a couple of episodes. (Note that during weekends it takes 3 alarms and a crowbar to pry me out of bed before noon). A few times I almost didn't make my work deadlines, but it was still worth it because no other anime has ever immersed me so fast and made me lose track of time so easily.

Excelsior! I mean examples, examples...

Other anime that have immersed me from the get-go:

*Ouran High School Host Club
*Code Geass

Manga that have immersed me from the get-go:
*Death Note
*Zombie Loan
*Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
*Vampire Knight
*School Rumble
*Bakuman (there are just a few chapters so far, but very awesome)
*MPD Psycho (this one's a little more graphic than other manga)

Surprisingly, Bleach didn't get to me from the first episode, or from the second, actually... The Orihime-Sora story is what made me keep watching it. So that means many anime don't pull you in from the start, but are still good!

Openings, Ending and Other Stuff

Openings, Ending and Other Stuff Let's face it, most of the openings used in an anime are absolute crap. Especially the old ones... They look like a 10 year old was on the animation team and took over all the people in charge by continuousl...
