I don't really know all the criticisms of his tenure, since I've been a fan since the first time I saw him and he is #2 in my Top 3 Doctors (#1 being Tom Baker and #3 being Matt Smith). I do understand some of the criticism though, since his first season was very wobbly in terms of stories, but that was never his fault of course. And I like how he evolved his Doctor, starting as more comical then gradually taking it darker.
I really do think the five stories I mentioned are some of the best of the classic series, and McCoy is a good place to start for fans who got in on the new series, because 1) The effects are less hokey than older stories, 2) His stories started to be more complex and bizarre, rather like some of the ones we're getting today, and 3) Seven and Ace are one of the greatest Doctor/Companion teams ever. Ace was also the first companion who's personal life and history got explored in more detail, especially in the last season, as three of the four stories were about her in one way or another.
Yeah, that was also what plagued Colin Baker for years until the Big Finish audios proved what an amazing Doctor he is as long as he has good stories to work with.
Heh, when I was watching the video I laughed out loud and my mom was like "Wut?" XP
And this also made me want to watch some McCoy today, so I've been watching Battlefield. :)

It's no different than any other video should be, and there was no indication on You Tube that it couldn't be embedded, but yeah, when I noticed the problem I included the link as well.
I think the McCoy stories I sited are the best classic ones to start with, since the stories of the late 80s have somewhat less hokey effects than if you go back earlier. :P A good place to start for someone who got into the series through the new version.
I keep getting an error on the video. I HAVE RARELY SQUEED SO MUCH IN MY LIFE OHHHMYGOD
Among the many things I've learned from being in the fandom, one prominent aspect is that people do not understand writing. Even if you know nothing of behind-the-scenes dealing, that doesn't mean you can't understand why an episode wasn't so good based upon the script alone.
I look at stuff with Eccles and marvel at some of the junk he had to act with. But I don't blame him for the sub-par and the bad, because he did the best he could with what he got. He was about the one saving grace of that season for me.
Actors are just easy to put the blame on, since they're the faces of the performance and gave life to crappy scripts. But too often people ignore that writing is the fundamental problem. [/rant]

Wow. That was awesome.
I really did like that Pandorica speech...
Is the video embedded here different? Well, the link worked...
Well... I think I might take a look at the classics some time soon.
