Leviathan

[Just a snippet of something else floating around in my mind.]

Janine safely got into the rowboat and handled the oars with care so as not to lose them to the fathomless sea beneath her. The island was a lonely, solitary blip on the waters, and it was time to vacate it. She decided that she was finished contemplating on the purpose of her existence...as so many characters often found themselves doing.

Off this Authorforsaken island, she thought, quickly enraptured by the freedom she felt all around her. As she continued to row, the island she had once dwelt gradually shrank into nonexistence.

Freedom...freedom was welcoming...it felt divine, breathing the fresh crisp air that surrounded her. This made Janine smile greatly, it made her laugh, and her love for freedom immediately grew...she soon forgot herself and committed to such a thing called freedom, oh glorious, sweet freedom. Just a few miles away and she would soon join society. The city...just miles and miles away.

Though it only seemed that way. At one additional row of the oar, darkness instantly fell upon Janine, and now nothing but black engulfed her existence. The night sky itself was not riddled with starlight, and no light at all, save for the half face of the moon above her. Something about the moon, however, seemed to jeer at her, and she looked away...feeling ashamed. Why?

Row faster, row faster, and faster! These waters were dangerous at night...Janine had completely forgotten, but now, she was promptly reminded. Still, she carefully rowed around the waves, which got increasingly tumultuous when she neared the city.

Tame these waters, Janine, tame them quickly, do not lose yourself in these waves, do not let them swallow you.

Janine...Janine...

What was calling her name??

With sweating palms, Janine pulled herself closer and closer to the motherland with no thought of relinquishing. The waves pushed at her, nudged her, and shoved at her, until she gasped at herself...worry suddenly plagued her mind.

What was she thinking? Her island...her safe little island.

Tame these waters, Janine, tame them quickly, do not lose yourself IN THESE WAVES! DO NOT LOSE YOURSELF!!

Janine paused in awe, her boat carried and tossed by the waters...and losing the oars, she could only hold onto the sides of the small boat to brace herself. A leviathan loomed over her...large, and overbearing, its red calculating eyes tearing deeply into her soul.

"I shall carry you to the city, safely," a fearsome, but paradoxically gentle voice swallowed the storm.

Janine, of course...agreed, "Please great leviathan! Take me to the city!"

Take me...take me....and swiftly, the leviathan engulfed Janine without mercy.

On the beaches near the city, they found a girl, but looked on quite uncaringly, and quite solemnly. They met her there, as she stood up, clothes a bit torn from the storm...eyes injured with a blank, soulless stare.

"Ah, one of our people," someone had murmured, looking upon Janine.

"Welcome to the city."

And breathlessly, zero emotion escaping her lips, Janine whispered, "Oh...brave new world."
