Porcupine Tree is a progressive rock band from England.
Created by Steven Wilson in the late 1980s, it actually started as a complex hoax. Inspired by the psychedelic bands of the 70s, Wilson fictionalized a legendary rock band he called The Porcupine Tree, creating a fake backstory and members, and recording hours of music as 'evidence' of the band's existence.
As the material was distributed in the underground music scene and developed a following, the hoax aspects were dropped, and throughout the 90s it changed from a mostly solo project by Wilson to a real band with real members.
While they are generally catagorized by fans as progressive rock, PT's music is a mix of several genres and influences with no single one being dominant. The most prominent aspects are ambient, psychedelia, rock, and more recently metal. The bands career can be divided into three phases: psychedelic and ambient in the early-mid 90s, more pop oriented songs in the late 90s, and rock/metal in the 21st century.
The band is album-oriented, with most of their recent matieral having a conceptual quality, but without a single, overarching concept. Wilson prefers to leave the music and concepts ambiguous so that fans can form their own opinions and draw their own conclusions.

Ayreon is a project from Dutch musician and composer Arjen Lucassen. Lucassen writes the music and lyrics as well as plays and sings on the albums. He is joined by many other musicians and vocalists.
The music of Ayreon is a mix of progressive rock and metal with elements of other genres such as folk, classical, and electronica to create what some view as an entirely new style of music.
All Ayreon albums are concept in nature, often dubbed "rock operas" because of their complex stories and the multitude of vocalists who each play a character. While the albums are not all direct sequals to each other, they all take place within the same universe and are connected.
