Severus Snape
What an extraordinary character. In the end, he was atoning for his wrong choices that lead to the death of the woman he loved. His want for power, a way to have some control in his sad life, is a very relatable concept. He ended up choosing the Dark Arts over what could have been brighter life, as he was a bright man. But he would never have Lily to himself.
I've always equated the Dark Arts with muggle drugs; more for their power of corruption, but having studied how drugs have been used medically, I'm not sure what to compare the Dark Arts with. Perhaps just the dark path life can take you down if you let it.
Magical & Muggle Counterparts
Dementors - Depression

Apparation - Driving (you need to pass a test to do both)
Underage magic - Underage ...drinking? Underage anything really
Voldemort and his Death Eaters - Any hypocritical supremest and the people misguided enough to follow, take your pick
Basically, it's just Jo's way of comparing the two worlds and showing that besides the awesome perks of her fantastical world, fundamentally, it is not unlike our own.
So, my question is: Is there a definitive Muggle counterpart to the Dark Arts?
