Losing

KEEFER

They'd only let Kateri stay with me for short amounts of time. Then they'd take her away and I'd hear her scream. I could move again, felt stronger too. But I still couldn't go human. And now there was a bony ridge down my back. Bony spikes stuck out from my snout too. What were they doing, turning me into a rhino? It scared me every time they took Teri out of the room. It felt like she was all that was keeping me sane in this place.

"Take her out."

I picked my head up. Not again....it was too soon.

"Sorry, mutt. But you'll have to say goodbye to your girl now." One of the men moved to grab her, but stopped at the deep growl that came from my throat. I rose to my feet and blocked their way. "Come on, wolf, I don't have time for this." The one acting like he was in charge tried to move past me. I lunged.

The man's yells tore through the room as my teeth sunk into his leg. "Let go, d*** you!" Yeah, like that was happening. "Grab him!"

I felt a foot slam into my ribs and lost my grip on the man's leg. One of the others grabbed the chain attached to my leg and yanked hard. I went down hard, and before I could get up, the others already had Kateri out the door. NO! I pulled against the chains, felt them cutting into my skin. Then something hit me and I went down again. The chain around my neck started tightening, and the man leaned close.

"You're lucky he won't let me kill you." His voice was laced with pain and hate. "But I'll get even, wolf boy." With that, he limped out of the room. I'd lost. Again.

The chain loosened. Someone was still in here. Slowly I turned my head to see a dark-haired guy standing there. I bared my teeth at him. Any target was better than none. He raised his hands and backed up a little.

"I do not want to hurt you, Keefer. Please listen to me."

Right. And why should I?

"Melina is here."

My ears perked up before I could stop them. Stupid canine stuff....

"I want to get her out of here. But not alone. And I cannot go with her."

Keep talking.....

"Can you run, Keefer?"

I nodded, or as close as I could come to a nod.

"Good. Just be ready."
