Memories Locked Away

MELINA

SUN! It seemed like years since I'd seen it. Giggling, I spun in circles, taking in the fresh air.

"Oh I missed you so much!"

Josue laughed. "I do not think I have ever seen someone so happy about the sun."

I smiled. "I love being outside. Have since I was little." Suddenly I was too dizzy to stand, so I flopped down. Worried I was hurt, Josue rushed over.

"Are you alright?"

I smiled up at him. "Perfect. You are so awesome for bringing me outside."

"I am glad I did. You look happy."

Oh geez...I felt myself blushing a little and decided to change the subject. "Josue, why do they scream like that?"

"Who?"

"The mental patients."

Did he tense a little? "Many reasons. Some hurt themselves, some are tortured by nightmares, some just scream."

"We help them."

"That's good."

He sat next to me. "You are always so happy. I wish I could be that way."

"Sometimes, you have to be happy to help other people to be. He doesn't understand that...."

He cocked his head. "Who?"

I stopped. Who had I been talking about? I'd meant someone...someone specific.... "I don't know.....Josue, do you ever....do you ever feel like there's something you should know, but you don't? Like something's locked in a box in your head and you can't unlock it? Great, now I'm sounding crazy."

"I understand. I have those boxes as well."

"Really?"

"Many of them."

"So how do you open them?"

"You don't."

"But there has to be a way."

"If it is locked, there is a reason."

"Josue....memories are there for a reason. Good or bad, they affect who we are. When you can't remember them...it's like....like you can't remember part of yourself."

He fell silent.

"Josue?"

Oh great, what had I done to him?

"Josue, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you or anything."

"No....you did not. We should go inside now."

With a sigh, I got to my feet and followed him back to my room.

"Thanks, Josue."

"My pleasure, Melina."

"You let her go outside?"

"I did not see the harm."

"I suppose there isn't any, but if she sees something that makes her remember...what is that look? Did she remember anything?"

"Of course not."

"Keep it that way."
