A Rescuer?

Goodness, Melina. You are so bored you're staring at the clock to watch the minutes go by.

With a sigh, I got off my bed and wandered around the room. The floor was smooth and cold against my bare feet, and the bright ceiling lights made it shine. My room was still a lot like a hospital room, but Uncle Anders was trying to make me feel more at home. As long as I didn't leave the room.

I still didn't understand what the big deal was. I didn't really hurt. I just couldn't remember the accident. In fact...I couldn't remember much of anything. There were flashes of memory, like Mom playing with me when I was little, and me and this older boy watching a movie. But there wasn't much else. My uncle only had a few pictures of my mom, and most of them had someone cropped out of them. I couldn't help but wonder who. He said Mom died when I was little and he'd taken care of me. Then I'd gone out with friends from school for my birthday, and they'd wrecked the car on the way home. He'd brought me here, to a special hospital or something that he worked at, and I could stay here as long as he thought I needed to.

I guess I should be grateful, but I was going crazy. I had to get outside somehow. Maybe I could find it on my own. Worth a try. Putting my ear against the door, I listened. No footsteps. Slowly, I opened the door and peeked out. Yes. Coast clear. I slipped out into the hall and crept down it until I came to a set of doors. Opening them slowly, I saw another hall. Everything was so quiet...

Suddenly a scream tore through the silence. A woman's scream, a scream of pain. It hurt my ears. Then a man screamed. Then another one. Scream after scream....what was this place? I wanted to run, but I couldn't. My legs wouldn't move. My arm fell, and the door swung toward me and hit me, knocking me down. Running footsteps. Someone was coming...strong arms lifted me off the ground.

"You shouldn't have been in there."

I turned to find that the source of the deep latino voice was a dark haired man. He smiled at me.

"Don't worry. You're safe now."

"What....who are they?"

"Mental patients. Don't worry, they aren't being hurt. But they would've hurt you. You should be more careful, Melina."

I blinked. "You know who I am?"

"Of course. I work with your uncle." Carefully, he set me on my feet. "I am Josue."

"Nice to meet you....I was just...trying to find outside. I want to see the sun....."

"Hmmm....and you should. Go back to your room, and I'll see what I can do."

I smiled. "Thank you."

"The pleasure is mine."

Giggling, I slipped back into my room.

"She was where?!"

"Almost in the hall where they are."

"How could you let her go there?!"

"Do not yell at me, it is not for me to be her bodyguard."

"You do what I tell you, Josue. And I am telling you to keep an eye on her. Maybe even make friends with her. Give her someone she can trust."

"Fine. But I better get a pay raise for it."

"You will, you will."
