Akira

“Let’s see… Laundry…” I sighed as I dug out my clothes from the previous week into the basket below the dryer.

I hated having this big building to myself. This place was gigantic since my family last owned it and left it to me. I found it in my father’s will. My big brother didn’t want it so I decided to get it, since I had nowhere else to live. Normally, I shared it with Sebastian and Karin, but they were off in Paris and coming back today. They weren’t coming back for another couple hours and the airport was only down the street. It wasn’t really a big deal.

Grabbing my laundry basket, I headed back up the stairs onto the main floor and strode into the living room. Sure, it may be a three story building that I owned, but it was still a hassle to clean. The upper two floors only consisted of rooms, empty or filled because of the three of us. I sighed and looked at the living room. It was gigantic, probably about the size of a ballroom, since this place used to be filled with my gigantic werewolf family. It was amazing how there weren’t any left now besides myself and my brother...

I walked through the living room to the other side where the spiral stairs were and climbed them. My room was on the third floor, since I don’t mind being high up and I let Sebastian and Karin have the second floor to themselves. It’s always odd when they are spending time with each other and I’m with them. Only at dinner does it seem okay. And then there were Karin’s odd dreams that she had been getting recently. Hopefully, they stopped.

I shook my head once I got up to the third floor to clear my mind and went into my room. Honestly, my room wasn’t much of a big deal. Just a basic queen sized bed and everything else that I could ever want, besides my father’s small items and the few things my brother gave me. I left my computer downstairs so right now, I had nothing to do but put away clothes. I sighed and walked over to my dresser and started the chore. I saw a pair of khakis that I wanted to wear instead of the shorts I was wearing now so I put those on quickly before putting the rest of my clothes away.

When I was finishing up putting away my clothes, I opened up my baseball hat drawer since I knew I would need one for going to the airport, but I opened it too wide and the whole drawer came out. I jumped out of the way, thankfully, so I wouldn’t bang my feet, and all of my hats went everywhere. I groaned.

“Great,” I sighed and started to pick up every hat that was on the floor.

While I was picking up hats, I noticed something glinting in the sunlight that I hadn’t seen before. It must have fallen out of my hat drawer... While holding a hat, I grabbed whatever was gleaming in the light and found a very small, gray, hard-drive.

It was about the size of my hand and rested firmly in my grasp. It had a small red clasp at the top and to me, it just seemed very interesting. I wonder... what's on it?

I quickly finished up putting away my hats while placing one on my head to cover my ears. I put the drawer back in and hurried back down onto the first floor and into the dining room. I had a plates already made for Sebastian and Karin when they got back. Rare meat was placed on mine and Sebastian’s plates, and Karin’s was already prepared with plenty of veggies.

I got my laptop off of the chair I left it on and pulled it open where there was a blank spot at the table and turned it upside down. I pried the cartridge up for hard drives with my nail and put in the thin hard drive. Once I snapped the small plate shut, I flipped my laptop back over and opened it up.

Immediately, a program popped up on my screen and I clicked on the only file it showed on the hard drive. That’s when a government agency logo and a map of the whole world popped up in what seemed to be a 3D interface. I had no idea what to do now. There were blinking dots everywhere and there were two moving right now across the Atlantic Ocean. I clicked a zoom in button and clicked on the two moving dots. Two names popped up and I just stared at the screen. It felt like my heart dropped. It said this:

TONIKU KARIN... SEBASTIAN de LEFEVRE...

This had to be a mistake. It just had to be. I clicked on their names and two pictures showed up. One that showed Sebastian’s face and one that showed Karin’s. It gave everything from their birth dates to their exact coordinates over the Atlantic Ocean, and even the plane they were on.

Okay... maybe this was just a coincidence. I decided to look at the other names that were around the world. ACACIA RAIDIX, France. VALERIE A. CARSON, England. GRIFFIN F. ATALUM, Greece. ZANE. GOSHEN. RAINE. TOMMY. As I hovered over each dot, I felt my head spinning.

There were others closer to America but I saw myself and clicked on the little blinking dot.

It was frighteningly detailed, just like Karin’s and Sebastian’s. It told my birth date, where I was born, what building I was in and what city in Virginia, which was Alexandria. This made me want to puke. This was a tracking device for all of the mythological creatures in the world, but it was odd how I just found the hard drive. Why didn’t I know about this before? And why would I hide it in my hat drawer?

Maybe... I could start up an official club for mythological creatures, the M.C.C., like I had been wanting to do since I was little. Sebastian thought I was crazy, and so did my brother. But this could help us and we could find out why we were being tracked. This wasn’t normal, but the bigger the army, the more reasons we could find out why we were being tracked.

I needed to tell Karin and Sebastian about this when they got back. Actually, it seemed they were about to land. I closed the program and then closed my laptop. For some odd reason, I wanted to hide it, so I quickly hid it and hurried out the door, making sure to tuck my tail into my khakis and got into my little Volkswagen.

I drove off to the airport, which was honestly just down the street, and got out and went to the platform they were supposed to arrive on from France. I looked over the crowd and tried to spot Karin or Sebastian. I turned around. Maybe she already passed me and was looking for me?

“Akira!” Before I could even turn around, I felt her jump onto my back and I had to move her up into a piggyback style, which I barely got into because I almost toppled over from the jump itself.

“Hey, Karin, I missed you too,” I laughed and I turned around to see Sebastian. He was looking as sharp as ever. “Hey, how was Paris?” I asked him. Sebastian had taken Karin there specifically because he loved her so much, even though he wouldn’t admit it.

“Fantastic, as always. It feels great, this time of year. I think Karin had a good time, right?” Sebastian laughed as Karin climbed up my shoulders. She tugged on my hat as she answered.

“You bet! It was so beautiful! I loved everything in that city! Well, other than...” That’s when Karin slipped off my back and was on the ground again. Just what happened that made her that stressed?

“Other than what?” I asked as my eyes wandered over the expression she was giving. I couldn’t smell anything different off of her. Nothing seemed seriously wrong.

“Karin...didn’t exactly sleep very well. It actually got a lot worse...” Sebastian explained quickly and I looked at Karin seriously with my eyes narrowing.

“Is that so...” Maybe this had something to do with what I just found... It would make sense if it had some connection to it.

“Akira, I saw you,” Karin suddenly blurted out. I stared at her, completely perturbed. “In the nightmare. You were there- in that awful place... with me, and- It was you. It was real. I was so-”

Karin,” I grasped the bridge of my nose with one hand while holding the other out to stop her. Honestly, it didn’t make any sense of why I was in her dreams. I really didn’t want to hear anymore right now. I was confused as it is. “We’ll talk about this later. Let’s go home, okay?” I told her and Sebastian helped her along to the car and inside it.

All I really did was drive and think about that hard drive and what it meant. What Karin’s dreams meant. Either way, it was confusing, and I needed to find out what it was.

And have that delicious rare meat for dinner.
