Chapter 71

Dia was getting rather nervous. Lady Kayden's essence, or spiritual embodiment, was shifting all over the place. It could be that Satan knew they would be coming, which was probably the case, and was warping the senses here so that no one could pinpoint her exact location.

Shunsuke was growing tired, becoming weak from the amount of blood he lost. They were stopped down a corridor after having killed two more demons. Shunsuke's arm was bleeding, as was his shoulder and thigh.

At this rate, the two of them wouldn't get to Satan in time, and even if they would, Shunsuke would be killed on the spot. He was far too weak to do much in his current condition. Dia, knowing what she had to do, placed her hand on Shunsuke's shoulder.

"What are you doing?" Shunsuke whispered, feeling her tiny touch to his wound.

"Keeping you alive," Dia responded knowingly. Closing here eyes, she focused all of her energy into moving part of her essence into Shunsuke. In doing so, she closed his wounds, healing him.

Shunsuke's eyes widened. "Thanks for healing me," he said after a moment.

"I did a lot more than that," Dia said, suddenly tired and weary. It was a good thing she didn't have to fight. "You now have a protective barrier that will protect you from lesser demons. If you go up against Satan, or if Kayden herself is Corrupted, it will do you no good. My power is no match for their strength."

"Kayden's that strong?" Shunsuke asked, worried.

"It will be trice what she normally is if she has become Corrupted." Dia knew he was about to ask what a Corrupted was, again, so she continued. "The Corrupted basically have no humanity left in them; they have completely been taken over by the Darkness and harbor no such feelings of regret, happiness, or love. They are nearly invincible."

Shunsuke nodded, "Right. SO, we have to get to Kayden before she becomes one of them."

Dia nodded as well. "I fear that our time is running short. She may already have converted. Thinking that there is nothing to live for, and Satan knowing we're here, I feel like the whole process was probably quickened than if circumstances would have been different."

Shunsuke's face paled. "Is there any way to get her back if she has changed?" he asked.

Dia thought for a moment. "I suppose making them feel an emotion they are not supposed to feel would bring back bits of their humanity until finally the hold Darkness has over them would be broken. Love would be your best bet. But, beings she thinks she has been left by you, it will be hard to get her to cast that aside."

Shunsuke looked straight ahead, seemingly knowing what he has to do. With Dia's help, they mowed down the demons that were guarding the door at the end of the hallway. Lady Kayden had to be beyond those doors. There were so many demons protecting it; it was a dead give away.

The protective shield Dia had given Shunsuke was nearly faded, and he signs of fatigue and weariness were returning, but that didn't slow him down or deter him from his goal. Kayden was within Reach and Dia knew he would go to any means necessary to get her back.
