Ugh Windows 8 =_= I'm sorry that I can't help you here... I just saw my friend's laptop with Windows 8 and I'm glad I don't have it XD It is confusing and annoying.
Maybe your files are somewhere hidden on the laptop? Don't do anything hasty in case u really do lose everything O_o
