Well in theory, the air pressure created from sucking can cause all types of bacteria to come in after the pressure splits the fragile cartilage in your mouth...
I'm pretty sure even with a cotton ball, the sucking on a straw thing can still cause dry sockets. I'm pretty sure that's what they told my friend. She got dry sockets, and it looked terrifyingly painful.
I'm not sure what it is about sucking, but it's just not good for you all around!
AGH, that sounds terrible!
Gives me the creeps just thinking about it; and its not like a front tooth where you could just stick your tongue in the spot where your teeth used to be, its way back in my tonsils!
I could just stick a cotton ball back there or something...
Dry sockets are when the blood clot where the tooth used to be, comes out. At least, I think that's what they are, if I remember correctly. Fortunately, I didn't have any, but I hear they're painful.
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!
I also have had my wisdom teeth removed. It also went really well. So well, I was out and about trying to buy a car and get insurance the next three days after. Haha. The dry sockets are only a quiet if you use straws really. The sucking motion is what creates the dry socket. I think it has something to do with the site hitting it. Not sure. I want super careful with mine and ate a burger after five days. And I never had a problem, though I wouldn't recommend it.
But it sounds like you are in a really good place right now, and I'm really happy for you! I hope everything keeps going your way! :)
I had my wisdom teeth out. Since I was anesthetized, it was the aftermath that was bothersome. I couldn't feel my lower lip for some time after that, but I forget how long exactly. I know I spent a good amount of time drinking milkshakes, but I couldn't use a straw for fear that I might get dry sockets. Fortunately, there were no complications for me.
If you do have to get them out, I hope everything goes smoothly.

I got all four of mine out, and two of mine were like that, too- little nubs. So they can still remove them.

Maybe you should ask a dentist or oral surgeon about what to do if that happens, since I'm no expert.

I guess that's not too debilitating. Plus you had "teeth" removed...I have this one little nub that isn't even a full tooth yet.
Never thought I'd be teething at this age, but that's neither here nor there.

Even with reflection on my lack of problems with getting injected with Novocain, I'm still wondering if I should be soothed or worried.
But what's with the dry sockets? How did that become a fear and work itself out?
