Reading IS fundamental. I wish that more people would give it a chance... with the recent boom in contemporary fiction and the rising popularity of nonfiction biography and memoir (case in point Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken appeals to teens of both genders), there should be plenty of interesting material for kids to read.
I have a sneaking suspicion that it has to do with not having access to books, or quality books, for that matter.
Eheh, yeah.
It's really sad how many kids are illiterate in a day and age when we have all of this incredible technology... just like finding kids who like to read for fun is next to impossible.

It really is, I don't understand how that is other than for one small and foolish reasons.
I actually disagree.
It correlates with the other reason but reading is fundamental.
Fun...To mental.

@elricbrothersfan:
Yeah, words like that can be so "vague" in their pronunciations.
(See what I did there?)
And illiteracy of that nature isn't as uncommon here.

At least you aren't the one poor kid who didn't know how to pronounce "vague" and so read it as va-GYOO. True story from my sophomore English teacher.
