I just had to take Nicole to the vets to have a leg ring removed. The standard ring size for a cockatiel is roughly 5.5mm. These were purchased from a breeder who deals with birds and is supposedly experienced. After applying the ring to Nicole, it was apparent that it was not welcome. I figured it was simply teething problems and Nicole would get used to it like my other birds did. However, a day later I noticed that he was not using his leg and it was a bit puffy.
After taking him to the vet, the ring was removed. It had dug into the skin and torn some away and also caused massive bruising under the skin. The wounds were sealed with wound adhesive and I will be giving him antibios and painkillers for ten days.
So, this is a warning. Do not buy/use these.
