Sigh

Battle? I thought. The cat, Zaphea- which I remembered the best out of all of them- pulled me to the banquet table. She had to sit right next to the Head, scowling.

I sighed as I sat down. But of course, the cat always wanted to catch the rat. I could easily depict the ill will from her towards me, yet I had none against her. Why did it have to go this way? Of course, I didn’t expect us to be bosom buddies and throw lilies around but I at least wanted to know that I held nothing against her and we could at least form a truce.

In the end, I don’t think I’ll even get that. I sighed again.

RAT!

The rat girl an into me. I had low self esteem right then, and didn't want to trouble the head. Speak of the devil, he actually appeared in the door way.

"Oh, Zaphea! Could you grab our run away Natsumi and bring her back to us? The banquet has yet to start!" I didn't want to make trouble, so I grabbed the girls arm and pulled her back inside.

"Everybody, it seems the cat has a little rat in it's paws! I'm sure it's willing to let it go." The last part sounded half sarcastic. A test. I didn't know what to do.

"It would be unfair to beat her when she's week," I said, "So I'll wait for her to eat, and then battle after." The head smirked, and guestuered to a food laden table. The head took their place at the head of the table, and I was about to sit a distance away, but I was told the head wanted me to sit next to them. Was this some kind of cruel trick? If it was, I had no choice but to play into it.

The Sohma Head

I tried my best to not make a fool of myself. I already failed, for accidently calling Nastumi by the wrong name.

I was approached by a figure. I twisted around to see who it was. Who else, but the head of the family.

“Hello,” the family head greeted me with a warm smile. I could have almost been fooled then and there. The feeling around the family head was anything but sweet, but I shouldn’t be too forward and make a fool of myself.

I smiled back. “Hello, Sohma Head,” I said back with false warmth. I’m sure the family head could see right through it, as sure as I could see right through there’s.

“It’s so nice for you to be here, my dear Rat,” they said. Lie. “I hope you enjoy yourself here.” Another lie. Something was up and really wrong.

At first I refrained from asking but it slipped. “What was that animal that ran from here?” I asked.

The room continued around us but the family head fell silent. “Oh, it was an overgrown house Cat,” the family head joked. It was cold and vindictive to none other than the cat.

I drew away, bowing. “I’m sorry, Head, but I must withdraw for now,” I said, keeping my face low to hide my frown.

I turned and ran into someone. I took a step back and cried, “I’m sorry!!"

Running...

I ran out of the room. When I passed a girl with silver hair, I knew it had to be the rat. I almost stopped to fight her, since I was more strengthened in that form, but decided it would feel like cheating. Plus, I didn't want her to see me in that form.

When I got to a small lake in the middle of the forest, I stopped at the shore. In my rush, I hadn't noticed that it started raining. Since the rat girl didn't really see me, I wondered if the head would drag me back. Like I would be powerless to stop them. Actually, the truth was, I didn't actually know who "they" were. I was forbidden to me the head. Until today, that is. But I heard rumors that the head had more God-like powers than any previous ones. Who knows what they would do to me. Hopefully, the rain hid the horrible stench.

Apparently, it wasn't enough to keep the head away. The unmistakable voice came from behind me. It sounded like a guy, but I couldn't tell over the rain.

"Why'd you leave so early?" he asked. "Natsumi didn't get to meet you at all, and the others only got a glimps. Guess it's time for you to come back." My bracelet plopped into the water beside me. "Now get your disgusting butt back to the main house." As soon as I touched the bracelet, I turned back to normal.

I found a sopping wet t-shirt hanging on a tree limp and put it on, then dragged my water laden self back to the banquet, where the head and zodiac members were waiting.

The Animal

We arrived at the banquet in no time at all. It was only 6:30 by the time we got there. Was the cat really invited to the banquet?

Just as I was about to enter, something big past by me. I watched as it passed, too transfixed on it as it disappeared. What was it? I wondered. It was for surely not a normal animal.

“Ma’am!” one of the maids said, pulling my shirt sleeve.

I turned to face her. “Yes?” I asked. Her face was chalk white and eyes as big as saucers saw throw me.

“W-we should go in,” she stuttered.

“You may go home,” I said, waving them off. They didn’t want to be here, I could tell. They ran back and I watched them run.

I turned to face the door and took a breath. I opened the door and walked in. Everyone seemed to have mixed feeling, but went right away, seeing the first appearance of the rat of the zodiac.
