I know that Fruits Basket, otherwise known as Furuba, is one of the most popular titles out there. I also know a couple of people who absolutly hate Tohru, claiming that she is a 'Mary-Sue', otherwise known as an overly-perfect person.
But is she really? I've been thinking about that for awhile. Thus, the rant begins.
Tohru is a kind-hearted person who willingly accepts anyone. Many people stay away from this kind of thing because it sounds too perfect. Tohru has healed many people just by smiling with them. This also sounds a little too perfect.
Sure, Tohru has many, many good qualities. But she also has some bad ones. She's a little bit too spazy. She also had many rivals (one sided rivals, but that's not the point) for affection. Not everyone likes Tohru. She doesn't want to burden anyone, but she can't take care of herself, which can get annoying.
Tohru is also in the dark when it comes to a lot of things. She doesn't know about Yuki's past, she doesn't know much about Arisa's encounter with Kureno, and she doesn't know anything about what happened to Rin, and (spoiler!) why Rin really cut off her hair...err....why she was forced to cut off her hair. Or somthing.....
In short, Tohru is a good person with good and bad qualities. She doesn't know as much about the Sohma's as we do, but she's willing to heal them. Does this really make her a Mary Sue? I'll leave that up to you.
