Hmm... I like older drawings a lot of the time. Sometimes you just have a bad inking/coloring/anything day. Like the other day I had a REALLY bad inking day. So I liked older pieces a lot better. :3

They're both good pictures. The October one is cute because of the sentiment involved. He's saying he'll be there for her. It's romantic!
Okay... the second one: Gaara. This is a very emotional picture. It's a bit on the abstract side, but it works. It conveys Gaara's feelings in a somewhat violent manner. Well, violent isn't exactly the right word. I think "powerful" is more appropriate. Gaara wants to be wanted. That's the irony of having "ai" tattooed on his forehead like that. He's been shunned by his own family and village. He wants the attention he never had, but can't get. Your picture expresses that very well.
Don't feel bad about your artwork. Just keep practicing! That's the key right there. I used to say to myself, "Gee, I wish I could draw like *****." But then I realized, I have my own style of drawing. I don't need to draw like any particular person. I just need to draw like myself. ... But when it gets right down to it, I just need to draw.

Maybe it's because either:
A) The October one has your original character
B) The October one is full-body
C) Kanji is evil to draw
D) The October one is a lovey-dovey scene
That's all I can come up with. I personally like them both, though.
