Interesting Specimen: AZ's Floette

I know it’s been ages since I’ve done one of these Interesting Specimen posts, but I thought I’d go ahead and do one again due to a small (and probably widely known) discovery I made while researching the X and Y games for a Pokemon fanfic I’m planning to write. This post is a bit different from an average Interesting Specimen post, because rather than focusing on an entire Pokemon species and its evolution line, I’m going to focus on a very specific Pokemon. The Pokemon I’m referring to is the Floette belonging to the former and immortal king of the Kalos Region, AZ.

First a little bit on the Floette species in general. They’re an all-female species of Fairy-type Pokemon, and the second in an evolution line beginning with Flabebe and ending with Florges. One thing worthy of note is that Flabebe is one of the two smallest Pokemon to date, sharing the same size as the adorable electric mite, Joltik. Also, the flowers of Flabebe, Floette and Florges come in different colors based on where they’re found. The colors are purely a cosmetic thing though and don’t have any effect in battle.

So what is it about AZ’s Floette that sets it apart from the other members of her species? Well for one thing, she has a much different appearance than the average Floette and carries a flower known as the Eternal Flower. But the biggest thing that sets AZ’s Floette apart from the rest of her kind is that she’s immortal. As the legend goes, AZ’s Floette perished in the ancient Kalos war, her little body returned to her master in a tiny box. Devastated, AZ constructed a giant machine to bring Floette back to life. Floette was resurrected as an immortal being, but the cost of her revival was the life force of many other Pokemon. Disgusted by her human partner’s actions, Floette abandoned AZ and left for parts unknown, and a devastated AZ turned the machine into a device that would later become Team Flare’s “ultimate weapon”.

In the Games: Floette’s pre-evolved form, Flabebe can be found on Kalos Routes 4 and 7, ranging from level six to level fourteen. A normal Floette can be found in the Friend Safari of X and Y, though it might be easier to just evolve a Flabebe. Florges meanwhile can only be obtained through evolution. As for AZ’s special Floette, believe it or not there’s data in the X and Y games for it to be used by the player. I don’t know how this was discovered exactly. Maybe some hacker found that AZ’s Floette was a usable Pokemon and toyed around with it. All I know for sure is that serebii.net and Bulbapedia both have information on the stats and other features of AZ’s Floette.

Evolution: Flabebe evolves into Floette at level nineteen, and a normal Floette evolves into Florges though exposure to a Shiny Stone. As for AZ’s special Floette though, evolution is not an option. Immortality comes with a price, and one of the prices that the Eternal Floette has paid is the inability to evolve even with the Shiny Stone. She’s sort of like that Spiky-Eared Pichu from HeartGold and SoulSilver back in Generation Four. Another physiological change to Floette caused by AZ’s weapon is that she no longer has the ability to breed, a curse of immortality also shared by Connor MacLeod in the movie, Highlander. One thing that AZ’s Floette does have going because of her immortality is that she has better stats than the other members of her species, but she’s further proof that immortality isn’t everything that it’s cracked up to be.

Signature Move: The final feature that sets AZ’s Floette apart from the rest of her kind is that she has her own signature move. As near as I can figure out, AZ’s machine not only altered Floette’s physiology to give her a unique appearance and made her unable to evolve or breed, it also infused Floette with a portion of its power in the form of a Fairy-type attack called Light of Ruin. Basically, Floette uses her eternal flower like a death ray and blasts the opponent with a powerful beam of light. While the attack does a lot of damage, Floette unfortunately takes half the damage that the attack inflicts as recoil. It’s a good thing that AZ’s Floette has higher than average stats for her species; otherwise the recoil might be a huge problem.

That pretty much wraps it up for this post. I hope that everyone enjoyed reading it and found it interesting. I have no idea if AZ’s Floette will ever be legitimately released to players as an event Pokemon. It’s probably doubtful that she will since we have the seventh generation games coming out later this year. Still, it’s kind of cool that she has her own signature move. Until next time, since this post has covered the topic of immortality, hI present my favorite song by the band, Queen.
