MEGA News!

Serebii.net just revealed some big, big information about Pokemon X and Y. Many of us are already aware that Mewtwo has received a new form. But he's apparently not going to be the only one getting this "makeover". At least five other Pokemon are receiving what are being called Mega Forms.

So these new forms are being called "evolutions" at the moment. In addition to some cool new looks, these Pokemon are getting new abilities and a few are getting type changes. The most surprising type change thus far is MegaAmpharos being an Electric/Dragon-type (though that is very awesome). One assumes that these new forms will provide some better stats. At the moment, these seem to be the only Pokemon who are getting this upgrade. But there might be a few more as time goes on. I'll update as soon as I learn more, so stay tuned.

8/8/2013 EDIT: I just took another quick look at the news update on serebii.net. Apparently one of the new female gym leaders in the game is going to hold the key to understanding these new Mega Evolutions.

8/9/2013 EDIT: A new video has been released that shows the new Mega Evolutions in action, along with some other new features. Check it out.

So from what the video suggests, these "Mega Evolutions" seem to be an in-battle transformation. But nothing has been confirmed. Also, the info on serebii.net seems to suggest that a special item might be needed for these transformations to work. But again, nothing has been fully confirmed yet. I'll update as soon as I learn more, so stay tuned.

8/9/2013 EDIT: I just scrolled further down the main page of serebii.net. It turns out that these "Mega Evolutions" only occur when the Pokemon in question is holding a special item called a Mega Stone. There also seem to be specific stones for each Pokemon. For instance, Blaziken needs a stone called Blazikenite. There's also confirmation that the evolutions are temporary and last only while in battle. So I guess one could look at these "Mega Evolutions" as Super Sayin forms for Pokemon. Finally, not all Pokemon will have a "Mega Evolution", and there's an in-game location called the Master Tower that has a connection to them. That's pretty much all on that for now. I'll update when I learn more, so stay tuned.

8/10/2013 EDIT: There's been a little bit of clarification on how the new "Mega Evolutions" work. Apparently you can only have one evolution in battle, though at the moment it's unclear if this refers to the entire battle or simply the whole Pokemon team. It's also been confirmed that once the battle ends, the Pokemon reverts back to its normal form, and not a moment before. Specific details are still unknown, so I'll update as soon as I learn more. Stay tuned.

8/10/2013 EDT: I just found out that Kangaskhan, the odd kangaroo Pokemon from Generation One, is going to be receiving a Mega Evolution as well. From the picture I've seen, the form change primarily effects the infant that Kangaskhan carries around, allowing it to leave the pouch and do battle alongside its mother. This transformation allows Kangaskhan to launch two attacks in one turn. One from the parent and one from the child. I'll keep my eye out for more details, so stay tuned.
