Sanji's seafaring life began a number of years before the current timeline. He was once a kitchen assistant on a ship that fell under attack by the Red Leg pirates. He fought against the group to no avail, but declared that he would one day find All Blue, the legendary ocean containing every type of fish in the world. After being thrown overboard, he was rescued by Captain "Red Leg" Zeff of the invading pirate group and they were both washed ashore on an island with sheer cliff on all sides.

Zeff handed Sanji a small bag of food and told him to stay on one side of the island and look out for ships. He then took a large bag for himself, explaining that he was bigger and thus needed more food. Sanji rationed his food to last 20 days. A few weeks after that was gone, a desperate Sanji decided to attack Zeff in order to steal his food. He cut open Zeff's bag to find a horde of treasure. He then discovered that Zeff had actually given him all his food, instead eating his own leg for survival. Zeff explained to Sanji that he didn't want the boy to die because he shared his dream of fining All Blue. They were both rescued days later, after which Zeff founded Baratie, a floating restaurant meant to cater to starving people on the sea. He met and joined Luffy nine years later, battling Don Krieg.

Sanji used to be very wasteful regarding food. However, the incident on the island changed him to the point where a single bowl of soup wasted provokes him to attack. He is also instantly infatuated with any reasonably attractive woman he lays eyes on, to the point of doting on them while ignoring everyone else in the room. This has also become a great weakness of his. He has been severely injured before by fighting a woman, whom he refused to hit. He never uses his hands in battle, claiming that his worth as a chef will disappear if he can't use his hands. He is also a bit vulgar in speech and enjoys disguising himself at times.

According to Oda, Sanji smells like cigarettes and seafood. His color is yellow and he resembles a duck.
