Usopp was just a young boy when his father, Yasopp (who later became a high-ranking member of the Red-Haired pirates,) left his family to become a pirate. Soon afterwards, Usopp's mother fell very ill. Usopp started to tell lies about pirates landing on the local shores in hopes that one day his father would return from his adventures with a 'miracle cure' for his wife. Sadly, she died before Yasopp ever had a chance to return. Usopp kept telling his lies long after, still hoping for his father to come back.

One day, shortly after his daily lies, Usopp was confronted by three young boys; Carrot, Pepper and Onion. They claimed he was famous for telling his lies, so he recruited them in his imaginary 'pirate crew.'

In the village Usopp grew up in, there was a very wealthy girl named Kaya who had been frail, sickly and distraught since her parents had died. When Usopp herd about this, he decided to visit her and see if he could cheer her up with a story. Though she was a bit resistant and even angry at first, Kaya soon gew to love Usopp's stories, every one of which he claimed were true.

Usopp first met Luffy in Usopp's hometown of Syrup Village. After protecting the village and Kaya from the evil Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates, Usopp became Luffy's second official crewmember.

Usopp is a self-proclaimed coward. He will go as far as to refuse to leave the ship on certain islands. However, he will gather up amazing amounts of courage in dire situations. In comparison, his alter-ego, Sogeking, is very brave. In fact, the difference is so great that Usopp almost seems schizophrenic when wearing the Sogeking mask. He is also a habitual liar. Chopper and Luffy tend to believe anything he says, no matter how ridiculous it sounds. His lies have an uncanny tendency to come true.

Usopp specializes in projectile combat. He is best at sniping, but he is decent at close-range combat thanks to his Skypeian dials and hammers. His main weapon, the Kabuto, is a giant five-pronged slingshot. It has an extremely long range and spin capability thanks to a breath dial installed inside. The prongs add stability to the projectiles. Usopp also has a wide variety of ammunition, such as shuriken, eggs, firebals and tabasco packets. He is also the designer of Nami's Climatact.

According to Eiichiro Oda, Usopp resembles an armadillo, smells like gunpowder and is represented by the color yellow. His nose is nine inches long and in Bon Clay's mind the funniest in the world.
