When Nami was a baby, her home island was turned into a battlefield. She was orphaned by this incident, but rescued along with another young girl named Nojiko by Belle-Mere, a Marine soldier who happened upon the two in the midst of the battle. They then returned to Belle-Mere's hometown of Cocayoshi Village where the young girls were adopted by their rescuer.
Even as a child, Nami had her mischievous side. She would often 'borrow' other people's belongings, such as chartbooks from the local bookstore. However, Belle-Mere would always bail her out, scolding the girl herself later. Nami has always had a natural talent for making charts and maps, which Belle-Mere always praised her for. Unfortunately, this peaceful existence was not to last.
One day, Nami had an argument with her foster mother. Money had always been scarce and Nami claimed that it would have been better for Belle-Mere if she didn't have two foster daughters to take care of. Nami left the house in frustration and was found by Genzo, a family friend and the unofficial village head. He explained to her that though times were hard, Belle-Mere loved her daughters and wouldn't give them up for anything in the world. Nojiko then came to find Nami and bring her back home. That was when the Fishmen landed.
"Saw-Tooth" Arlong, the captain of the Arlong pirates and former crewmate and equal of Jimbei, a Fisman Pirate who had gained the distinct honor of being one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, had arrived on the island. The first act of the Arlong pirates was to enslave every human on the island, forcing them to pay for their right to live. The price was fifty thousand Beri for children and one hundred thousand for each adult. Belle-Mere only had one hundred thousand Beri saved up total, but Nami and Nojiko weren't home at the time, so the villagers encouraged her to pay for her own life and allow the children to escape. In the end, however, Belle-Mere couldn't bring herself to deny being a mother, and was shot in the head to serve and example to the other residents.
Shortly thereafter, Arlong discovered Nami's uncanny ability to create excellent maps. He recruited her into his crew, promising her that if she could raise one hundred million Beri, she could buy her village back and be free from any obligation to him. She agreed, and spent many of the years afterward stealing from other pirates to gain the money.
Though Luffy technically met Nami right after Zoro, she is technically his fourth recruit instead of second. The initial partnership was agreed on as temporary. After the events of the Arlong Park Arc, Nami became an official crewmember.
Though she can seem greedy and selfish, Nami is actually a very caring person. For example, all of the stealing between the time that Belle-Mere was killed and when she met Luffy was to buy back her village and free it from Arlong's tyranny. She is also very cunning, being one of the smartest members of the Straw Hat Pirates.
In battle, Nami uses a weapon invented by Usopp known as the Climatact. It is a modified Bo Staff specifically designed to change the environment and create small weather effects including lightning, rain, wind, cold fronts, warm fronts and mirages. Besides being an excellent cartographer, Nami has shown an amazing talent at meteorology, making the weapon a perfect fit.
According to author Eiichiro Oda, Nami smells like money and tangerines, resembles a cat and is represented by the color orange.
