We Three Kings

"HOW MANY DAYS HAVE PASSED?!

Drew kept looking at the stars, trying to find out what day it was. "How long have we stayed?!"

"....maybe a week?" Bruce answered, reading his book, and Faye was, once more, fixing Jiro (or trying to). It was almost as if they'd never left home...

"WE HAVE TO FIND HIM!" Drew yelled. "A WEEK! A WEEK SINCE HE'S BEEN BORN AND WE'RE NOT THERE!"

Bruce's book snapped shut. "You're right. Let's go."

"Dammit, you British hippie, I said I can't be fixed!" Jiro howled and Faye sighed. "You're right. We've gotten too comfortable here, yeah? Let's go."

That night, they snuck out, noticing the star was, thankfully, still high in the sky. "WOW. Someone's looking out for us." Drew laughed, watching it.

"Indeed. We don't know how long they will, though."

For three days and three nights, the three traveled through the dusty desert terrain, until they saw that the star was hovering above one place; a small stable. "Is this it?" Bruce asked, sliding off of his camel.

"It seems like it, yeah?" Faye said, but he lowered his voice when the mother and child came into view.

It wasn't hard to see what was so special about the child. There was a certain something that made all three of them bow in his presence. All stupidity abruptly ended.

"We...have gifts." Faye said suddenly, and his comrades nodded vigorously, pulling three items out of their packs.

Each one set down a gift. "We're sorry we're late..." Drew swallowed.

The first one to set down his gift was gold. "Fit for a king." He said, a small smile on his face, and the mother nodded slowly.

Faye set his gift down next. "Frankincense. It has a beautiful smell, and should calm ya in times of great stress."

Drew was the last to put down his gift, and he put it down hesitantly. "....my gift is that of myrrh." He closed his eyes, remembering the prophecy. "For burials." For a moment, his eyes met the mother's and she was able to see the sadness in them. He stood after a while, bowing slightly to the mother and father (and even more so to the babe), then gestured to his companions. "It's about time for us to leave."

The other two nodded, standing and bowing as he had and started on their way, though not before the baby smiled, making all of their cheeks color for some odd reason.

"You know," Faye said, once they were out of earshot, "I feel really good right now, and I don't know why. Do you think we should go back to that King Herod guy or what?"

"No." Drew said, closing his eyes, "An angel came to me in a dream and told me we should just go home. Nothing good will befall any of us if we return to him."

Bruce was the first one to say anything. "The same thing happened to me...."

"And to me as well! Small world, eh?" They all exchanged a grin. "Now the only question is, why did you give the child Myrrh?" Faye said, turning to Drew.

Drew only gave him a sad smile and saddled his camel.
