Title: The Necklace
Series: from the Greek myth of Harmonia and Cadmus

Lord Hephaestus was grinning. All around him courtiers were proclaiming what a glorious bride his daughter was.
“As fair as her mother,” boasted Hephaestus, “adorned with a necklace of my own making.”
The courtiers praised his skill and generosity, also remarking on the groom’s good fortune.
“My lord,” I entreated as I struggled to push my way through the gathering.
But he had no eyes for me. I stood alone in the corridor when he and his court strode to the atrium where the wedding would soon commence. I hastened through the palace to the bride’s chamber.
Her maids had dressed her and she, the girl I had served for eighteen years, was beautiful indeed. At her throat gleamed a bejeweled necklace formed as two golden snakes entwining to clasp each other’s mouth at the back. She looked at me staring at her.
“Is anything wrong?”
I couldn’t speak. Tearfully I curtsied to her as she glided out to meet her groom. Only I knew that Lord Hephaestus was not her real father, and that to punish his wife’s infidelity he had cursed the necklace to bring doom upon any woman who wore it.

This tale emerged as a story within a story. I had gotten my young characters into a situation where they were hiding out at the farm of some backwoods folks. To while away an evening the old farmer tells the kids a tale of heroic deeds ...words of wisdom...
