Well, I use paint tool sai. I also tend to pick the exact color I want for my shades also. But I guess I could pick up my colored pencils again. It's been quite a while since I've used them. It could really help me a lot. My biggest concern right now is that I can't seem to find a good technique for my hair coloring that fits with my style.
What program are you using? ;o I can look for a tutorial for that program.
Although, regardless of what program you use I think it helps to try out traditional coloring. :D I recommend colored pencils 'cause they're easy to use, and I think it's easier to get a feel for shadows, lights, and darks when you're using them... but maybe that's just me. xD
Also for digital art, if you're using the dodge/burn tool a lot, MANY people say to step away from that and pick colors to use for shadows and highlights. :) Idk if you are or not, that's just what people say. xD
I'm not an expert on coloring, so it's totally fine if you ignore my suggestions. xD

Thanks! I hope it get it down...or at least better soon enough. Artists really are never 100% content with their work.
