Tales of Infinity, Part 1

Tales of Infinity, Part 1

A tall, 13-year-old girl glared angrily up at the sky. Her long, light brown ponytails blew gently in the soft breeze. Her blue-green eyes scanned the clouds as if she could make it all disappear. A part of her wanted to forget what had happened the day before... Shards of who-knows-what fell from the sky, or in this case, the Outer Planes.

"Humph," She said. The Outer Planes were a mystery, a far-off land that no one knew very much about. What she couldn't understand, though, was why everyone was after those things that fell from the sky.

"Naomi-chan!" A voice called.

Naomi glanced over her shoulder at her small house that she lived in. It was her grandmother, Rose. She was waving at her to come on inside. Now what? Naomi thought. Nevertheless, Naomi trudged back to greet her grandmother.

"Yeah, what is it?" She asked bitterly.

"Respect your elders, young lady. I understand about your parent's accident, but the sympathy card has been replaced. Anyway, there's someone who wants to meet you; you should come inside." She told her, pointing a finger at Naomi. "Ah, fine." Naomi said. I've got nothing else better to do anyway.

Naomi walked into the small house. Several windows on one wall let in slants of bright sunlight, illuminating the entire place. The old wooden floor was covered by a blue rug. Vases of withering flowers could be seen on a dresser, dishes stacked on a counter with a sink. A table with four chairs sat in the middle of the room. But something different came about from the room's usual presence...

That was because a thin, notably muscular man with long white hair tied back in a braid was occupying one of the four chairs. He wore a strange uniform: black, red and blue. He had black pants, a red and black overcoat with white sleeves, wore a black hat, and white gloves. On his feet he wore shiny, silver-buckled polished boots that shined in the sunlight. He looked like he belonged to the higher class, a noble or court officer of some kind.

The man smiled at Naomi as she walked in. "Who are you?" She demanded.

The man's smile still remained on his pale face. His dark eyes darted toward hers.

"Well I thought you'd never ask. I am Dorobay Lighsphere, noble of Lord Ebony VI." He replied cheerfully.

Man, his attitude sucks, thought Naomi. She rolled her eyes.

"And you must be... Naomi Miyazaki." Dorobay guessed.

Naomi folded her arms and raised an eyebrow.

"How do you know my name?" She asked.

"Uh... good guess." He answered, smiling.

Rose chuckled. This would be interesting, she thought. Naomi didn't take to kindly to anyone older than her, especially nobles. What an idiot.

"Well, now that you two know each other... Mr. Lighsphere, I believe you were here on intended business?" Rose asked.

"Yes, of course. Thank you for reminding me. And please, call me Dorobay." He said.

Great, Naomi thought sarcastically, he's polite, cheerful, and worse: he's an adult.

"Anyway," Dorobay said, "Naomi, I came here for your permission to take you with me for a while."

Thus followed an awkward silence. Naomi stared, the gears turning in her head. 'Take you with me?' She thought.

"You mean... away from home?" She said, glancing at Rose.

Rose shrugged. Dorobay, noticing the annoyance, frowned.

"Of course, only if that's all right with Rose-san." He inquired.

"What is the situation?"Rose asked.

Dorobay looked up at her darkly.

"The Ancient Artifacts," He replied.
