Mysterious Past chapter 6: Falling in Love

Chapter 6: Falling in Love
The first thing Sora noticed was the shelves. Not really the shelves themselves, but the strange trinkets on them. They all resembled fire and flames. There was a marble flame on the shelf nearest to her, the reds and oranges mixing together toward the top. She picked it up and examined it, and then she gasped. The beautiful object appeared like it was moving! The flames were moving, dancing up and down. Her hand tingled and she set the object down. When she looked up, Yami was smiling at her.
“How did you like that?” he asked her, smiling.
“Did you do that?” she questioned, curiosity coating her voice. She was in awe.
He shook his head. “My great-great-great grandfather passed that item down from generation to generation and it ended up in my hands. I never really knew how that little flame dance happened, all I know is that it stunned my ancestors.”
Sora stared at him. “You mean to tell me it does it on its own? That it doesn’t need any tricks or magic to do that?”
He nodded. She sank to the chair. “What do these other things do?” she motioned to everything else in the room.
He picked up what looked like a fountain. “This is an Ember Fountain. Instead of flowing water, there is flowing fire and lava. Lava pours out and small fire balls spurt from the top.”
He handed Sora the strange object. It was still for a few moments then it started doing stuff. Lava started flowing out and while it continued to pour, miniature fire spheres erupted from the top.
“This is so beautiful!” she exclaimed.
He smiled at her. Her smile seemed to light up his entire world. It was all he needed. All those years he was away, all he needed to remember was that beautiful smile and those sparkling eyes looking at him now.
Yami walked over to her, leaning down slowly, as not to startle her. Her smile faded and longing replaced the joy in her eyes just moments before. She closed her eyes and tilted her face upward toward him. His lips turned up ever so slightly, his eyes closing. His hand covered hers on the object. He gently untangled it from her grasp and set it on the shelf near them. Her fingers were inching their way toward his shoulder, admiring those muscles he spent years forming. His hand slid up her arm, caressed her neck and cheek, and entangled themselves in her hair. Her other hand gently cupped his face in its palm. As their lips moved slowly toward each other, their heartbeats quickened. Once their lips met, it was like a fire erupted.
Passion, heat, love and deep emotions met in the middle. Their lips formed together, moving together. He pulled her closer to her, not wanting to let go. Their bodies molded. He swept his tongue along her lips playfully. She opened her lips slightly and his tongue entered. They played cat and mouse, hands never leaving the others form. When they pulled back slightly, they were both breathing heavily. She smiled at him and the passion in her eyes made him want more; so much more. He knew, though, that it couldn’t happen. If he attached himself to her, she could get hurt.
“I love you,” she murmured, leaving a soft kiss on his lips. It was like the whispering wind, brushing softly against the leaves in Autumn.
“As do I,” he told her, pulling her close and kissing her until she was breathless.
“Now, I’m afraid, you must go to my mother and find out if she has any extra bedding for you. You mustn’t sleep on the floor. Or, I’ll do it. You just stay here and relax. Be safe, my love,” he said before kissing her and departing.
‘What am I doing?’ Sora wondered. ‘I’m letting myself fall in love.’ Then, she smiled. ‘It’s worth it.’ Just thinking about those deep eyes and that wonderful kiss, she knew she would die for him.

Mysterious Past Chapter 5: Discovery

On the way to wherever his coven was, she started asking questions.
“Will they like me?”
He smiled, “I’m sure they will. Why wouldn’t they?”
“I don’t know. Are they nice?”
He nodded.
“Um,” she paused. She didn’t want to ask, but she felt she needed to. “Are there any pretty girls in your coven?”
He glanced at her. There were, but they were his family. He told her this as they got off the freeway. She nodded, then asked, “But are there any girls who aren’t your family?”
He smiled and shook his head. She smiled; at least she didn’t have competition. Just as she was about to turn to observe him as he drove, he turned into a dirt pathway that was lined with plants. They followed the path for about fifteen minutes, then they came to a clearing filled with make shift tents, a few trees, and the most wonderful, beautiful thing- Witches and Warlocks practicing their magic. You could see flashes of light, fire, water, lightening, and more flying around it the air. She gasped, admiring the beauty.
“We’re here,” he murmured.
He got out of the car and went around to open Sora’s. She smiled at him, and climbed out. He took her hand and led her through the throng of witches and warlocks, who have stopped their practicing in curiosity, and took her to a tent at the far end of the clearing. Once there, he stopped. “Okay, beware my mother,” was all he said.

He opened the flap and walked in, pulling Sora along with him. When they entered, Sora took in the surroundings. There were many things around the cramped area. But she noticed a thin lady standing nearby. “Yami!” she explained and rushed forward to hug him. She spent a few moments asking how his journey was and telling him she missed him, before he pulled back.
“Mom, this is Sora,” he introduced. She peered around Yami to take in Sora’s appearance. She looked her up and down, before finally saying, “My, she’s a beautiful, young lady.” Sora smiled.
Then, his mom rushed forward to hug her and ask her many questions. Sora heard none of it, for she was looking at Yami for help. “Okay mom, I think we should leave her a little breathing room.”
His mother released her and stepped back. “Okay, now for serious matters,” she said. “Do you know?” she asked, looking at Sora.
Sora nodded.
“So you told her?” his mother asked, looking at Yami now. He nodded.
“Is there a good reason for her knowing about a secret we kept from the mortal world for centuries?” she asked, her voice rising.
“Because,” started Yami, “she’s one of us.”
“No,” she gasped. “Can it be?” She now looked at Sora, a peculiar expression on her face.
“She’s a Water specialist.”
Now, his mother looked at him. “A water specialist?” she asked. He nodded.
“She’s the second, including you.”
Now, Sora was surprised. His mother was the first? He didn’t say anything about her.
His mother was now advancing on Sora. When she reached her, his mother walked many slow circles around Sora. ‘What is she doing?’ Sora wondered. After about ten circles, his mother came to a stop.
“She doesn’t seem like she would be a Water specialist,” his mother pointed out. Sora smiled. She had thought of this too.
“Well, she is. She wanted training to enhance, master, and control her powers. I thought to bring her here because your element is also water. I can teach her control, if you wish, but you need to teach her the rest. That is, if you want,” Yami said.
His mother nodded.
“If I don’t teach her, who else will?” she smiled. Sora returned the smile. Yami grinned.
“Well, I guess that’s settled, then,” he said, his happiness radiating around him.
“Have you guys planned where she will stay?” his mother asked now.
“Stay?” both Yami and Sora asked in unison.
“Yes,” she said, looking from one to the other. “She needs somewhere to sleep.”
“Sleep. Right. Okay, let me show you where my tent is,” Yami said, scratching his head.
“Are you sure she wants to stay in your tent?” his mother asked, smiling.
Yami looked at Sora. “It’s up to you, you know.”
Sora nodded. “Sure, sounds good.”
Yami grinned. His mother had a hint of a smile on her lips.
“By the way, my name is Umi. Umi Yoru,” she told Sora.
Sora turned towards Umi. “My name is Sora. Sora Kumo.”
“Well, nice to meet you Sora,” Umi said, smiling.
“Same here, Ms. Yoru,” Sora said, returning the smile.
Yami grabbed Sora’s hand and led her out of his mother’s tent and out into the open. They walked through the clearing until they came to a lone tent standing by a tree. He released her hand and walked ahead to open the flap. Waving his hand in towards the tent, he bowed and said, “Welcome! To the great tent of Yami Kage.”
Sora giggled and walked in, Yami following close behind.

Chapter 4

When Sora awoke the next morning, she had a horrible head ache. Her necklace felt heavier than usual. When she lifted her hand to feel it, it was as cold as ice. ‘That’s weird,’ she thought to herself. ‘Normally, it’s a little warmer.’ She just shook her head and headed into her bathroom to get ready for the day. When she thought about what Yami had murmured to her last night, she smiled. Don’t worry. I will be back as soon as I can.
When she came out of the bathroom some time later, with her hair dripping wet and spread around her shoulders, the phone rang. It kept ringing until finally going to voice mail- she needed to brush her hair. “Hi. Um, it’s me.” Yami’s voice came over the speakers. Sora froze. Then she ran to the now quiet except for breathing ansering machine. When she picked up, she heard his breathing right in her ear. That was enough to stun her for minute. “Hello?” Yami said uncertainly, not sure if she had picked up yet.
“Um, Hi Y-yami,” she stammered. ‘Why do I have to sound so nervous?’ she asked herself, irritated.
~~~~~~~
When Yami heard her breathy voice over the phone, he smiled. Her voice was enough to make his heart beat just a bit faster, to make his breathing a little less even.
“Why are you calling so early?” she now asked.
“Early? Sora, it’s ten o’clock in the morning.”
Her name felt so weird, yet pleasant passing through his lips. He would probably never tire of saying it.
“Sorry, I guess. I think I slept in a little,” she apologized. Yami chuckled quietly. “Why are you laughing at me?” she demanded.
Yami laughed a bit, and then answered. “It’s just that you are apologizing for something silly, like sleeping in. It’s alright. Anyways, would you like to know the reason for my calling your house?”
~~~~~~~
Sora didn’t want to talk about why he called. She knew it had to be something important, not just to talk to her. ‘I wonder if he will ever call me just to talk to me?’ she wondered. When his voice came over the speaker of the phone again, she snapped back to attention.
“Well, I don’t know if I will be able to come over tonight, like I did last night. I’m sorry, but something has come up and my family and I have to train even more now. One of the members of my coven heard that the rival coven is planning an all out attack. They are thinking about trying it out in simple citizens, like children, teenagers, and every day city folk. Once they determine whether or not the regular every day people will follow their every command, they plan on going after your leaders: the financial managers, the mayors, governors, even the president. We have to stop them. They plan on ruling over their bodies so they can take control of the mortal world and every one will listen to everything they say because they’ll think those men are their leaders.
“I don’t want to know where he retrieved that information, but it was very helpful. I am sorry.”
As Yami finished explaining, Sora realized something. “I thought that you could communicate through fire. Why didn’t you?”
“One, you weren’t around any fires, and two, only you can contact me through fire, I can’t contact you. I could try, but you wouldn’t receive or hear anything. Your specialty isn’t fire.”
When he mentioned that she doesn’t specialize in fire, she remembered the conversation they had the night before.

*****

“Can I warn you of something else?” he asked, uncertain. When she looked back at him, confused, he looked down.

“What is it?” she asked him. She couldn’t stand it when people kept things in.

“Well, don’t be mad at me, okay? But some of my family members have been talking about how there may be another Water specialist on the horizon. And she is said to live in this city.”

When she tilted her head, a sign that she didn’t understand, he explained it more thoroughly.

“A ‘Water specialist’ is a new witch that specializes in water. She is said to be around our age and lives in this city.”

Sora’s head suddenly flew to Mizu. “No, it can’t be,” she murmured.

“It isn’t Mizu,” he confirmed.

“Then, who….,” she drifted off, mid-sentence.

He slowly lifted his finger towards her.

“Me?” she squeaked. She didn’t even look like somebody who would have water powers. That kind of person would have, like, blue hair and blue eyes and be pale white or something. She was none of those things. She had a bit of a tan, brown hair, and matching brown eyes. If anything, she’d probably do better in earth, or something.

“Appearance doesn’t have anything to do with it.”

*****

“Were you serious about me being a Witch last night?” she whispered. When he stayed silent, she got a little irritated. “I want to know, Yami,” she said sternly. “I need to know.”
After a few seconds of Sora waiting impatiently for Yami to answer and Yami fighting his uncertainty, he finally answered. “Yes, I was serious. Look, I know it is unsettling finding out that you may have powers and are different than others around you, but isn’t it better to find out the weird things, instead of never knowing what you are capable of doing?”
Sora had to agree with him, if grudgingly. “Well, you know,” she began, “it is cool to have some powers. Even if it does label you as a freak.”
She heard the sweet sound of Yami’s laughter and sighed happily. His laughter was like a chorus of bells, so beautiful.
“Well, I had better go. More training to be done,” he said. He didn’t sound very happy, which made Sora’s heart soar. He didn’t want to stop talking to her. Suddenly, she had an idea.
“Yami.” She said to make him listen.
“What is it?” he asked, suddenly curious.
“Well, a new fledgling know nothing about her powers, right? She can’t control them or anything?” she asked him.
“No, you’re right. A new witch or warlock knows nothing about control.”
“And she needs training from the best, right?” she asked eagerly. She knew she was getting close to her main question.
“Yes, that’s right,” he answered, now wanting to know what she wanted from all these questions.
“Well, how do you feel about you and your family training me? Or just you would be fine.”
~~~~~~~
When she asked that question, Yami was surprised. He hadn’t even thought about his coven training her. The others would be shocked to see who the new Water specialist was. He smiled at the thought. His mother would be ecstatic to find out that she was not the only Water specialist in our country. Water specialists are very rare. There is maybe one in every country. To have TWO Water specialists in ONE country is a miracle. It is said that the second Water specialist, if there is one, is to be the most powerful of them all.
‘My mother would be a perfect trainer for Sora,’ he thought. ‘ I may teach her about control, but the rest has to come from my mother.’
He was also happy that this will give him an opportunity to spend more time with her. Suddenly, he realized something.
‘I think I love her.’ The thought surprised him. He hadn’t thought about it, but come to think of it, he had been thinking about her during his training session time. In between his training lessons, when he had free time, he thought about her. Whether she had grown up to be nice and beautiful, or whether she would be pretty and shy. When he had seen her that day around the corner, he was stunned to see that she beautiful and kind, and straight forward.
“I think that is a wonderful idea. I will be over in a few, then. I will have to contact the others to let them know I will be a little late. I will see you later.”
~~~~~~~
When she hung up the phone, she was happy. Not only would she be getting the training she needed, she will also get to spend time with Yami, and meet his family, or coven, or whatever you call it. Luckily, she had already taken a shower, so she just had to find an outfit. She wasn’t going to call Mizu to help her this time. She was going to do it on her own. Once she found an outfit- A pair of jean shorts to show off her long legs, a simple white shirt that hugged her figure, but not tightly, and a pair of sandals- she sat on her bed and picked up her phone again. She wasn’t going to call Yami- she had just talked to him- but she was going to call Mizu. When Mizu picked up the phone, Sora quickly told her the whole story, about the conversation last night, and that she was going to meet his family and everything. When she was done saying all of that, she added one last thing she had just barely realized. “I think I am in love with him,” she confessed to her best friend.
~~~~~~~
Mizu had nothing had nothing to say. Her friend was a Witch? Not only that, but a Water specialist too? And Yami was a Warlock? It was all just too fictional to believe. One thing she could comment on was her friend’s sudden confession.
“You love him?” she asked, shocked. She couldn’t picture Sora falling in love with somebody so fast. He was barely back for what? Two days? And she had already fallen in love.
“I just realized it like, a few minutes ago, when I got off the phone with him,” Sora said defensively.
“Whoa. Well, does he know this?”
“No, I don’t think so. I haven’t thought about it around him, so I don’t think so,” Sora told her.
“Well, just go meet his family and master these freaky water powers you have, and let me know if anything happens, ok?” Mizu requested.
“No problem. I will talk to you later.”
“Ok. Later.”
~~~~~~~
Sora hung up the phone, and was just about to sit down, when she heard a light tapping at her window. She went over to open it, and Yami crawled in. This time, instead of arguing, he kissed her lightly on the cheek and sat down on her bed.
“Are you ready to go?” he asked. When he looked at her to hear her answer, he smiled. She was blushing lightly. She was not the only one that was affected by the kiss. His heart started beating faster as he leaned in. When he sat down on the bed, it was to calm his heart beat. She nodded her head, grabbed her purse, and stood by the window.
“Do you want to go out the front?” he asked her. She just shook her head and climbed out of the window and onto the lawn. He smiled at her choice and followed. They hopped into his car- which she absolutely loved- and headed to his coven’s hide out.

Mysterious Past Chapter 3: Confusion

When Sora entered her room, she saw a figure hovering outside her bedroom window. She was about to scream, when she realized it looked pretty familiar. She sighed in relief and went to open the window. He climbed through the window as graceful as a cougar and landed on the floor without a sound.

“Why didn’t you just come in through the door?” she asked, motioning to the general direction of the front door.

“It’s much more fun entering a room through a window, don’t you think?” he replied with a grin. “You look nice, by the way.”

Sora couldn’t reply; his smile lit up his eyes and made him look so cute. His grin quickly disappeared, though, and he sat down on her bed, motioning for her to do the same. When she was seated, he took her hands in his own and looked into her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you the truth,” he confessed, looking down. After a few minutes had passed- him sorting through his thoughts and her staring at him completely confused- he looked at her again. “Do you want to know the truth?”he pressed. As soon as she nodded, he released her hands and stood. As he began pacing, Sora grew nervous. ‘Why is being so mysterious, anyway?’ she wondered. When he passed her once more, she captured his hands.

“Calm down,” she soothed. He nodded and looked once more into her wondering eyes.

“What I’m about to tell you isn’t a happy story. It’s full of things you only see in movies. But it’s the truth. It’s……..my story,” he warned. She nodded slightly, not sure whether she was encouraging him to continue or just acknowledging that she understood. He took it as encouragement, and plunged into his story.

“Remember that fateful day when I said goodbye?”

Sora nodded, her eyes still curious. “It wasn’t a family emergency you’re familiar with. My father didn’t get re-located, we didn’t have to go to the hospital, nothing that’s dire to a…. mortal,” he explained, pausing before the last word.

At the word ‘mortal’, Sora quit breathing. After a while, Yami looked over at her. When he took in her expression, he tried to get her to breathe again. “Sora..….Sora! Sora, look at me!” he demanded. When she focused on him, he relaxed. ‘At least she’s able to listen,’ he thought to himself. “Just listen to the rest of the story, okay?” he requested. She slowly nodded, showing him that she heard and will do as he asked. When he saw that she was inhaling some oxygen again, he continued.

“Well, the real reason why I left was because my family realized that a rival coven of witches had tracked us down and we weren’t ready to fight them, yet. The reason why we came back was because all throughout the ten years we were gone, we were practicing everything that was in the Book of Shadows, a book where there are spells, rituals, and recipes that was written by a single witch or coven. Once we memorized everything that was written upon those pages, we decided to come back to our lovely home town to check and see if the other coven is still here. You’ll be surprised when you find out who are the members. They might be your friendly neighbors, or your rude math teacher. It could even be your best friend.

“The reason why I wanted to tell you this was because I thought you should be warned. If you see anyone acting strange or different than they did before, then contact me.”

Sora was about to point out that she couldn’t possibly communicate with him if she didn’t even have his phone number. But when she was about to open her mouth to say this aloud, he out a finger to her lips.

“You don’t really need my phone number to communicate with me. I am what they call a Warlock; a male witch. They are very rare, but powerful at all times, given the right training. Unlike females, who are only at their most powerful on a full moon or a new moon, Warlocks are able to cast powerful spells or rituals no matter what time of year or day it is.

“Every witch and warlock has their specialties. We may be able to cast every spell with great accuracy and power-warlocks most powerfully, of course- but the spells that contain or involve the element that is our specialty, we can cast more powerfully than the others. Does that make sense?” he asked, turning to see Sora’s expression. Her eyes were wide, her face like a painting of shock. When she wondered what he could have possibly been doing all these years, she didn’t imagine that he could have been hidden away somewhere, practicing sorcery. When she realized he had asked her a question, she nodded. He smiled a little, and then continued on with his story.

“Well, my specialty is fire. If you can locate a nearby fire, or even a candle flame will do, though the message won’t be very clear; then you can just tell me who is acting strange and who it is, and my family and I can cure them of their curse. Unless, of course, they are a fellow witch or warlock- enemies, though- then we won’t be able to do anything.

“We came back to defeat them if they try to take over the mortal race by using their superior magic. I have mastered the spells faster than anyone else in the coven, which is why I am able to wander away from them. I know that you will have a hard time believing all of this, but you have to realize that this is the truth. Do you have any questions?”

Sora was completely confused. She heard everything that came out of his mouth and she will remember everything, but she didn’t understand anything. Everything that he explained sounded like it came out of a movie she and Mizu watched a while ago, when they went through a supernatural phase. But she did have a question.

“When did you first find out that you were a so-called Warlock?” she asked straight out. Yami had to admit, she was still as straight shooting that she was when they were kids. Even though she probably didn’t believe anything he said, she was still acting like she did.

“Well, it was the day after my birthday. I was playing with one of the toys someone had gotten me, and all of a sudden it burst into flame. I remember thinking, ‘It’s cold in here. I wish it were warmer,’ and next thing I know, my toy burst into flame. Luckily, I wasn’t the only ‘witch’ in my family. My mother, her specialty is water, murmured a few words, probably and incantation, and a stream of water poured out of her finger. I remember being scared. I never knew she could do that. Well, she later explained to me what I was, and forbid any thoughts about heat, warmth, anything that may start a fire without my control, until I can master my powers. Later, I found out that when you’re a kid, you can cast a spell just by thinking about what it is you want, like I did with the flaming toy. Yet, once you’re a year older than your ‘birth’ year- that’s what they call it when you first find out you’re a witch or warlock- you have to say a spell, a rhyme that contains what you want to happen, along with mental focus and spiritual energy.

“Is that a good explanation?” he asked her. She nodded and turned to look out the window. She saw a raven perched on the branch. She noticed a Corvette drive by on the otherwise deserted street. A cat jumped into an open window to its owner’s open arms. The whole while, she was going through everything he had just said.

“Why do you always seem to answer my thoughts? Are you able to read minds too?” she questioned.

He laughed a bitter laugh. “No, nothing like that. I just kind of get this feeling of what you’re thinking about, and I guess what you mean, then I answer. It’s annoying sometimes, though, because it feels like they’re talking, but they’re not. I always get the two confused. I am still learning, though.”

He glanced quickly at the clock. “It’s getting late. I probably should let you go to sleep now.”

When she looked torn, he captured her face in his hands and gazed deep into her eyes. “Don’t worry. I will be back as soon as I can. Just remember; don’t shoot anything outside your window.”

He then kissed her on the cheek and disappeared through her window and into the darkness of night. She crawled under her covers, somewhat in a daze, and fell asleep. Her dreams consisted mostly of flashes of light, fire, and Yami within the midst of it all. He stood in the middle, completely enveloped by the licking flames, yet not coming in contact. Sometime at night, as it started raining, the necklace she always wore around her neck- the gem, aquamarine, surrounded by a thin band of silver- began to shimmer, at first, but when the rain gradually became heavier, it began to glow.
