Oh, I know that. That's why we need to know them pretty well for our finals. I do use them in every day speech (thanks to all the movies and what not) but when I need to remember them I can't. And as you said it is more for native speakers, so even for me I don't use it that often.
Thank you for writing those, they sure will help! :D
Seems like you have a lot already but here are some more :3
"...and the whole nine yards"
pretty much just means that whoever the person is talking about did everything possible that could be done in that situation
"the cat's meow"
meaning that it's something special, could also be pajama's instead of meow, although that doesn't make sense... >.>;
"You're in great shape!"
meaning you're doing well in a project or something or the sort, not just physically fit
"Head buried in the sand"
meaning someone isn't accepting reality
"My neck of the woods"
meaning the person in question was born in the same area as the speaker
"Whale of a time"
a great time :3
"all ears"
ready to listen to what you have to say
"butter fingers"
meaning you just can't seem to hold onto things, it's meant to be funny, like if a friend drops a few things in a close period of time you'd say that
"something fishy"
something suspicious
Some double-meanings as well
"sick"
literally ill; something is disturbing/disgusting; awesome
"wicked"
the actual being wicked and nasty and stuff, or being awesome/cool
Is there one that you have in mind specifically?
I’ll just list some anyway (it took me a while to figure out what they mean as well)! XD
1. Once in a blue moon: used when something happens very rarely
2. Miss the boat: when someone missed his or her chance at something
3. Kill two birds with one stone: doing two things as the same time
4. Take what someone says with a pinch of salt: not to take someone says too seriously as it may be possible that they are partially true
5. The best of both worlds: all the advantages
6. Sit on the fence: when someone does not want to make a decision
Hope that helps! >3< These are the most common that I can think off the top of my head! XD
Take cares~
