Two-Paragraph Review: The Lego Movie (2014)

Wow, I watched a more recent movie for once!

Genres: action, animation, comedy, fantasy
Warnings: none, probably the purest G ever

The main reason I'm doing such a short review of The Lego Movie is simply because I can't find much to say about it - both positive and negative. I can see younger kids enjoying it, but to me it was first annoying, then boring, then slightly interesting towards the end, then boring again. It doesn't have much in the way of adult entertainment, and there is absolutely no cursing (or creative replacements for it).

This movie has three main selling points: humor, action sequences and animation. The animation wowed me at times, I'll give it that; it was interesting to see what could be done considering the limited movement of Lego pieces. The humor is very "in your face" and most of the jokes felt lazily written, like the scriptwriters were struggling to use the least creative ones they could find. The action sequences were alright, but the pacing is very fast and sometimes I needed a few seconds to catch up to what was going on.

The music wasn't too memorable - save for a particular piece, whose role was to be dumb, repetitive and unforgettable - and the voice acting was...OK. Really, the whole thing is just...mediocre overall. The animation is the best part, too bad it doesn't have a good enough story to match it.
