He packed up his clothing with some food and left early in the morning. With everyone asleep, he was able to leave without detection. This was the beginning of a long journey, one that would take him to Tokyo.
--
11 Days later.
Tired and hungry, Kadashi finally made it to Tokyo. He had many insect bites hadn’t eaten for 7 days, having run out of food. Unfortunately, he didn’t know how to hunt animals either, so he wasn’t able to kill any for food. Despair and darkness filled his heart.
“I came here to run away from my past. Yet all I feel is darkness and hunger,” he said, a tear falling down his cheek.
Next thing he knew, he saw a building nearby. In it was some fresh rice and noodles. He snuck in and decided to take an opportunity. He put his hand on the food and his mouth watered, loving the look of the food. As soon as he was about to grab it, he got busted. A girl grabbed him around the stomach and flung him down to the ground.
“What do you think you’re doing?” said a tall, seventeen-year-old girl.
“Hey, I was just observing the food,” Kadashi said, giggling nervously.
“Don’t you know stealing is wrong?” she said, angrily.
Without warning, Kadashi began to cry; the girl’s anger was reminding him of his father. Shocked by his reaction, she got a little calmer and sighed.
“Kid, don’t you know what’s right and wrong?” she said, trying to make her voice more gentle.
“I’m sorry. I’m really useless! I’m starving because I can’t get any food and because I’m an idiot! I’m going to die and no one is going to care!” he said.
She took sympathy on him and hugged him. This girl knew what it was like to be in pain and depression. She held him in her arms, tightly.
“No, you’re not an idiot. Look, you can have the food. Just don’t steal anymore. And don’t put yourself down like that. It isn’t good to beat yourself down.”
He smiled a little and cried a bit more. She handed him a handkerchief and he took it, wiping his tears and eating. As soon as he finished his meal, he walked out of the house and thanked her.
“You’re welcome-,” she said, as he ran off into the street in the crisp morning.
She shook her head and hoped he’d be okay. Turns out her hopes were wrong. A few days later, Kadashi tried to steal from a merchant, a drunk one.
As soon as the merchant caught him, he punched and kicked him. The boy cried, trying to run away. But the man was too big and too fast. He pummeled Kadashi to the ground and hit him against some sharp rocks. Continuing to beat him, he refused to stop.
Just then, the girl who helped Kadashi a few days before ran over. She had heard some noises and saw what the merchant was doing. Shocked, she refused to let him hurt Kadashi anymore.
“No!” the guy yelled.
He ran to punch Kadashi but the girl slammed a fist into his stomach and hit his neck, knocking him down. Taking advantage of this, she ran to Kadashi, picked up his body with her arms, and ran off, getting away before the merchant could get up.
--
Kadashi woke up later, wounded and bloody. He looked at his body and saw many bandages. Then, he looked around and saw that he was in a house. Turning his head, he also saw a knife nearby.
“All I do is get beat up and abused. I hate myself!” he yelled and moved the knife closer to his neck.
Just then, the girl came in and widened her eyes. Seeing Kadashi with the knife, she freaked out.
“What are you doing? Put that down! Don’t kill yourself!” she yelled.
“NO! I must! There’s too much pain in this world!”
“No! That’s not the way to go! Listen, I know you hate this world and must be suffering a lot but please don’t kill yourself. I’m sure someone loves you and if you kill yourself, they’ll suffer too! Even if no one else loves you, I care for you! You’re my newest friend and I can’t stand to lose you!” she screamed, crying loudly.
That made him freeze. He remembered his mother and how much she loved him. He also thought about his new friend, the girl who saved him. Kadashi put the knife down and shook his head.
“Thank you. But I still have no hope. Life’s hopeless. All that happens to me just ends up hurting me.”
“Awwww, well don’t lose hope. I’ll be there and I’ll help you through this,” she said.
“Thank you, but, can I tell you something?” he said, unable to hold his pain.
She nodded and he let out all of his feelings. He began to cry immensely and told the story of his life to her, screaming and crying about all the events that had hurt his heart. As he did, he hugged his friend tightly and cried on her shoulder, unable to handle it. She listened and didn’t interrupt, crying a little herself. Never before had she heard a story so depressing.
