Wer Bin Ich

Ok so this is a fiction I wrote after getting inspired by a German song "Wer bin ich" by Lafee.
Can be read as Yaoi, but it's more of a brotherly love. Enjoy!
(oh and its the potato brothers)

Wer Bin Ich

Ludwig was sitting snugly on the couch, reading a book on biology. Ludwig loved reading. The wonders of discovering the facts he did not know, the knowledge provided him with new excitement and satisfaction.

As he flipped through the old crumbling browned pages, he felt a large thump beside him. The identity was pretty obvious, since he caught a glimpse of the silver hair sparkling like river of silk.

“West~!!”
His brother moaned in a faded voice, as he tangled his slender arms around Ludwig’s waist.
“What is it ni-san”
Ludwig sighed. Not because his brother snuggled up close to him, but because he was fed up with Gilbert’s boss. How could he make his brother work so hard until he was absolutely exhausted like this?
Gilbert’s scarlet eyes were clearly worn out. They were only half open, and Ludwig could see that his line of sight was wavering, and he wasn’t really looking at anything, just trying to keep his eyes open.

“You should go to sleep ni-san”
Ludwig combed Gilbert’s soft pearly hair with his hand, feeling each strand slide and fall through his fingers. How soft it felt. How weak Gilbert’s arms felt around his waist, a bit too slender for a strong person like him.

“I don’t want to….”
Gilbert cried softly, his deep, husky voice muffled beside his intelligent little brother.

Oh how weak and small he looked, his powerless arms clutching Ludwig’s clothes as if his life depended on it. It made people want to protect him, to cut away all that was going to harm him in the near future. It was very ironic, because it was actually Gilbert who always protected Ludwig and hid him under his warm wide wings from sadness and hatred.

“Ni-san…”
Ludwig laid his book down on a cushion, and tried to unlock the hold of his brother.

“Mmmmm….” Gilbert groaned, shaking his head left to right, protesting that he did not want to let go.

“I couldn’t see you for days…. Because of all the work.”
He slowly lifted his head up, a faint smile appearing on the corner of his perfectly shaped lips.
“At least let me be at your side until tomorrow…”
Ludwig could not say anything. Here was his proud, powerful brother, almost losing to sleepiness, fighting back desperately just to be beside his beloved little brother. How tired he must be. How must he have worked so hard through all that towering paperwork, just to come back home a little bit early to catch his brother before he retired for the night.

Ludwig felt something hot choking his throat.
He too, wanted to see his brother so badly. He wanted to go and meet him during work time, but he knew that he was going to be a nuisance.
He was torn between two emotions.
A part of him wanted to stay with Gilbert, to enjoy the warmth and chat together so they could fill in the space left by the days they couldn’t see each other. But at the same time, a part of him wished the best of his brother’s health. Gilbert could hardly keep his eyes open now, and Ludwig understood that he needed to sleep as long as time would allow.

If he was a child, he would have chosen to stay with him without any hesitation. But he was not a child anymore. Ludwig was an adult who understood the responsibility and consequences his brother had to carry for the society.

He clenched his fists, and attempted to untangle Gilbert’s arms once more.
“Ni-san, you really should go to sleep.”

Gilbert’s eyes opened wide, like he had been badly hurt.
“No, West, please….”
Gilbert croaked, his eyes pleading for Ludwig’s company, his warmth and kindness.

Ludwig’s heart ached.
How he hated to see his brother so weak and vulnerable. His slender body looked as if it was going to snap in two at any moment.

“Can’t we… sleep together here…?”
What was his dear brother saying to him? Ludwig shouted inside his head. He would surely catch a cold sleeping on top of a sofa.

“No ni-san, it’s too cold.”
“You’ll keep me warm”
Gilbert pouted.

Maybe so, but how can two fully grown men fit comfortably on a sofa and sleep? It was impossible.
As he thought of right words to say, Gilbert let go of Ludwig and stood up, almost losing his balance.

“Fine.”
He whispered.
“I’ll go to my room and sleep.”
He smiled sadly, and staggered off slowly to the door.

“Wait!”
Ludwig acted before he could think. He pulled Gilbert's arm and yanked him back to the sofa, hugging him as tightly as he could.
“I’m sorry. I wanted to see you too… it’s just that…. I worry about your health.”

“I know.”
Gilbert giggled.
“I knew.”
He repeated.

“I just knew you would change your mind when your big brother looked so sad.”
He patted Ludwig’s head, just like he always used to do when Ludwig was just a small country.

“Ni-san!”
What a troublesome brother he had been stuck with.

Gilbert laughed, and whispered something in Ludwig’s ear.

“Wer bin ich.”

-Tell me why-

“Ni-san?”
Tell you what? Ludwig wondered.

“It’s nothing.”
Gilbert reached for the lamp, and with a clear ringing click, the light was out. It was a bit uncomfortable lying on the sofa together, but it was warm.

“Wer bin ich.”
Gilbert said in his mind again.

-Tell me why-

Tell me why I deserve such an adorable little brother-
