Coral Kitties

The year is 1952, and six Kitsies were on their way to boarding school. The train journey was slow and dull; this expression was running through all the Kitsies minds. Samantha was sleeping soundly in the corner of the cabin, a book slipping gently from her hands. Gloria was daydreaming out of the window, humming softly to herself, her tail twitching hypnotically side to side. Sasha was energetically studying with the help of Ricky. Andrew and Phillip were on the cabin floor playing Chess. The book in Samantha’s hand fell to the floor with a sluggish thud. It was 1pm, when they all decided they were bored. Their journey began 3 hours ago. Sasha, Samantha, Gloria and Ricky, Andrew and Phillip were all on their way to Coral High Boarding school. They all had mixed feelings about this place, it seemed ok when their parents told then of the place, but as Phillip pointed out grumpily, it was a boarding school and all boarding schools are mind numbing.
“For goodness sake!” Sasha said abruptly, making everybody jump and waking up Samantha, who fell on top of poor Andrew. “Can’t we all talk a little?”
Gloria yawned, “Are we there yet?”
“I’ll go and find out from a steward if we’re close or something,” Said Andrew, who was stiff sitting on the floor and now his head, hurt from Samantha falling on him, “Anybody hungry?”
“Yeah I am,” Said Phillip, getting up, “I’ll come with you too.”
“Yes please, anything will do.” Sasha said
“An apple, please.” said Gloria, pleasantly.
“No thanks.” Yawned Samantha, climbing back on her seat, then curling back up into a ball and went back to sleep, with her red tail twitching lazily.
“Can I have an apple too, Andrew?” Ricky answered just as Andrew and Phillip left the cabin; he picked up Samantha’s book.
It was about four children, humans, not kitsies like he and his friends were, going out of this world and into another by a wardrobe. ‘Lion, Witch and Wardrobe by C.S.Lewis’ he read. It was Samantha’s favourite book. He couldn’t see why though, he read it once and found it strange, but when he told Samantha this he couldn’t quite explain what he meant. Samantha wasn't really bothered by Ricky’s disagreement, she told him it is all a matter of taste and left it at that.
He smiled to himself and placed the book back in the pocket of Samantha’s backpack.
“What’s up?” asked Gloria, looking up from her own book.
“Nothing, just thoughts,” replied Ricky, shaking his head, “What are you reading, anything good?”
“Nah, not really, just a book on British history,”
“Oh yeah,” Ricky ears pricked up, “What era?”
“At the moment I’m on the year 1942,” She said, passing him the open book, “Read that page.”
Ricky took the book from her and read. It told him that on 5th January 1942, 3,000 Kitsies gave their lives in the WW2. In the year 1946, the government passed a law that all ‘Kitsies’ are to live in peace with Humans. They can come out of hiding and have jobs and their children can openly go to school.
“Wow,” Ricky whispered, looking up at Gloria who was sitting there watching him with her deep, sympathetic, purple eyes.
“You ok?” She inquired finally, watching his silence.
“Mamma, can I have some Tuna…?” slurred Samantha as she turned in her sleep.
“Yes, I’m fine, here have your book,” Ricky said putting the book back into her hands, twisted and slowly walked towards the door, “I’m going for a walk.”
With that, he closed the door quietly behind him.
“What’s up with him?” Sasha asked, looking up from her studies at Gloria.
“Something he read.” She replied, Sasha shrugged and went back to revising.

The train stopped with a hiss and the six friends grabbed their things and got off the train.
“Come along first years, follow me.” Shouted a huge Kitsy man. He was 6”2, muscular in build; he had a clean black fur with pointy ears perched right on top of his oval head.
They all followed this colossal man into an enormous castle where they were greeted a tall, slender, sharp-looking Kitsy woman; her fur was a light grey with streaks of almost pearly white. Her name was Mrs Mistword. She told the excited Kitsy children to wait where they were for a minute or two. When she had left them, a ginger snobby girl behind Samantha prodded her in the back.
“I didn’t know they allowed riffraff to enter the school grounds.” She sneered.
“Oi, you leave my friend alone!” Sasha hissed, as she stepped forward between the girl and Samantha, making herself a barrier. “She is worth more than you!”
“Yes, yes whatever you say,” Said the girl carelessly, waving a well manicured paw at Samantha and Sasha, as though they were just a fly, a nuisance, “but have your parents ever told you not to tell lies?”
Sasha stepped forward, claws appearing from her paws, the girl squeaked with fear. Gloria took a step forward, placed a paw on her shoulder, and whispered something Sasha’s ear, which seemed to calm her down.
“Don’t mess with my friends, please.” Said Gloria politely, “I do not appreciate it.”
The girl nodded, dumb with fear, she was more worried over her ‘beautiful’ face when Sasha stepped forward menacingly than actually getting into a fight.
Mrs Mistword came back, and asked them all to follow her into the Great hall.
The Great hall was massive, with beautifully illustrated tapestries lining the four walls. Giant bronze chandeliers with thick cream melted candles flickering away lighting the room. There was a warm, pleasant, homely feeling. Six dark brown tables stood in the area on a black slate floor. The tables were long and at least 150 Kitsy children lined four of the tables leaving one left, for the first years. Mrs Mistword led them to the first table telling them to take a seat. Sasha, Samantha and Gloria sat on one side with Ricky, Phillip and Andrew sitting on the other.
“Look at the Head master,” Phillip whispered, “He must be ancient”
The old Kitsy man stood up, he had light grey fur, patches in some places, his whiskers were crooked and he walked with a limp.
“Welcome first years to Coral High boarding school,” The Kitsy croaked, though he was weak and elderly he had a loud booming voice, “I hope you all enjoy yourselves, make many friends and become geniuses,” he joked.
“I think I like this guy,” Sasha whispered, smiling, “He’s funny.”
“Shush!” Ricky hushed her.
“I have nothing else to say apart from… let the feast begin!” He smiled and many Kitsy men and women came through a door, burdened with all kinds of food. Forty Kitsies came to each table, serving everybody drinks, food and cutlery.
“Yummy!” Samantha cried her eyes lit up as she cut herself a generous slice of tuna fish.
Phillip and Gloria looked at her and laughed.
“If you were that hungry, Sammy, you would have taken up Andrew’s offer of food on the train,” Phillip scolded.
“Yeah, well,” Samantha finished her mouthful, “I was keeping my appetite for dinner!”
They all laughed at her, shaking their heads in disbelief.
Someone coughed for attention behind Samantha. It was that girl.
“I’m sorry for my earlier ill-manners, my name is Gwen.” She informed them.
She not to be trusted, Sasha thought my hairs on the back of my neck are standing up on their ends when I see her, always trust the hair.
“Hello, my name is Gloria; and this is Samantha, Sasha, Ricky, Phillip and Andrew.”
“Very…um… nice to meet you all.” Gwen said carefully picking out her words.
“Is that all?” Sasha said, trying to say it nicely but it turned out snappy and she sounded irritated “You are butting in our dinner and yours must be getting chilly.”
“Yes very well.” Gwen said awkwardly, and shifted away.
When she had gone, Gloria turned to Sasha.
“What was that for?” Gloria snapped, “She didn’t do anything!”
“She picked on our friend, that’s what she did!”
“Guys, stop quarrelling please,” Samantha pleaded, “I’ve got to share a room with you two and I don’t to feel like someone has left window open because you two have fallen out!”
Sasha looked at Gloria then to her feet.
“Sorry Gloria.” She said at length.
“I’m sorry too, Sasha.” Gloria apologised.
“I best go and say sorry to Gwen, see you in a minute.” She sighed and stood up and sulked away towards Gwen. She paused, waiting courteously for Gwen and her friend to pause in their conversation.
“I’m sorry for being snappy, Gwen.” She said when they had finished.
“Scarlett, I’ve just had a ridiculous moment, one of the riffraff has just apologised to me!” She laughed. Sasha became very angry.
“THAT IS IT!” Sasha shrieked and threw herself on top of Gwen, piercing and scuffed every part her claws could reach.
“YOU TWO, STOP THIS SILLY BEHAVIOUR AT ONCE!” Mrs Mistword glided towards them, seized Sasha and ripped her off Gwen, who was crying hysterically. “Come with me both of you!”

“Right explain yourselves!” Mrs Mistword growled, “Your parents would not be so pleased of you were to be expelled on your first night, would they?”
“No, Mrs Mistword,” Sasha mumbled, stepping forward shamefacedly, “Please ma’am, I didn’t mean to lose my temper but you see I have such short tether…”
“Oh shut up you blithering idiot!” Gwen complained loudly, a bit too loudly for both Sasha and Mrs Mistword.
“Excuse me!” They chorused appalled.
“Miss Flutterworth, detention tomorrow at half past five!” Mrs Mistword bellowed and the two girls flinched.
“Oh but…” Gwen whined.
“‘Oh but’ nothing Miss Flutterworth!” Mrs Mistword snarled, “In my office you will treat my students with respect, same to you, Miss Constarnt!”
“Yes ma’am!”
“Now good night, classes start at nine tomorrow, do not be late.”
“Yes ma’am!”

"Oh my god!"
Sasha and gloria were awake in seconds. Sasha fell out of bed in fright, claws out ready to fight. Gloria, her eyes wide with fear clutching her quilt, looked around.
"What's the matter Samantha?!" Growled Sasha, disliking the fact there was nothing wrong or Samantha wouldn't be beaming at her, standing there in the middle of the room like an idiot.
"Our window's right above the sea," She rushed backed to the widow, as though it might disappear. "Its so beautiful!"
"I'll give you beautiful in a minute, if you that again," Sasha grumbled, putting her claws away and making her bed.
"Samantha," Gloria looked different when she was angry, she was never angry. Gloria was the laid back one, who fought with words not with fists, teeth or claws. "Don't you ever do that again, you hear me?! You scared me nearly to death!!"
