The majority of music I listen to is progressive rock & metal. I love it because it's not mainstream, it's not something you'd hear overplayed on the radio. There's also a diversity within the genres themselves. Some are more modern, some have a more retro sound that harks back to music of the 70s. Favorite bands include Rush, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Threshold.
I also like power metal, from stuff like Iron Maiden and Iced Earth to more symphonic bands like Kamelot and Nightwish. And then I'm into a small amount of Swedish melodic death metal, mainly In Flames, Soilwork and Dark Tranquillity.
I grew up listening to the Beatles, classical music and Big Band era jazz and still like these things. And I listen to one punk band: Bad Religion.

Like everyone, I like a whole mix o' everything, but there are a few I like more than others.
My favorite genres are really odd genres. Not as simple as rock or anything. I like Voltaire's Irish-Folk-Goth whatever it is and MSI's.. Synthpunk? I dont even know what they do. Bu ti know there isnt a very good explaination. Aside from the weird ones, I like alternative rock, I suppose.

I definitely jump around. My favorite type of music is Soundtrack, though. I love listening to my Doctor Who or PotC soundtracks. It's really great because I play the cello, and I can really get into a lot of the Orchestra stuff, but also because that type of music is really great at expressing emotion. Hans Zimmer is incredible. I also like to jam to Rock and Country, and I'll listen to certain types of pop. Oh, I've been loving Queen lately. The only thing I can't stand is Rap, but even then, there's a couple Eminem songs that I enjoy.

I'm pretty evenly split between the alternative 90s you speak of and folk rock. Nothing adult contemporary or anything. I love Ani DiFranco, Demian Rice and Regina Spektor right now.
Classic rock, upbeat jazz and a little bit of punk. I listen to a lot of Queen, Earth Wind and Fire, Styx and stuff like that. I also have a soft spot for Frank Sinatra and Bowling for Soup is probably my favorite current band.
Oh, and Richard Cheese's lounge covers of popular music. For example.
I have the most random mp3 player ever. There is pop, metal, alternative rock, classic rock, big band/swing, orchestral soundtracks, blues, techno, parodies and stuff in all sorts of languages. Oh, and the Hockey Night in Canada theme.
The only things I really don't care for are country and the R&B/rap conglomeration that glorifies negative stereotypes. Two of my coworkers will only (loudly) play the music that I dislike and know all the words to every song, which makes it slightly awkward when I turn on the classical radio station. Then they don't care and turn it back and then I has a sad. Whatever. I need to work on my collection though. Not enough hard rock and I think people are getting sick of me singing along to Rammstein.
It really depends on my mood, if I'm really angry i listen to screamo if I'm happy, i listen to dance and when I'm tired i listen to classical but i hate to say my overall favourate genre is rock/metal :P
Dear Common Sense, I miss you please come home, before I do something else stupid. Love Me.
