Chapter 8: Worth nothing

Valentina was sitting at the latest campsite staring at the star filled sky. It had been a week since Whitahkay had joined them but all three of them had already become closer then they been to anyone outside of their family. Kit was the only one of them that did not have any positive relationships before Valentina and Whitahkay. They both had their mothers. Valentina looked at Whitahkay then bounced up and sat next to him.
“How’s it goin’?” she asked. Whitahkay looked at her, surprised, still not used to her spontaneous nature.
“Uh, I’m good. You?”
“I’m fine.” Valentina shivered as a cold breeze swept over them on the already cool night.

Suddenly, she hugged Whitahkay.
“It’s FREEZING!” she said in a high-pitched voice. Whitahkay tried to pry off Valentina’s iron grip. After much struggling, he gave up. Valentina was stronger then he was. Only then did Valentina let go.
“What is your problem!?” She shouted at him “I was really cold! I needed to warm up some how!”
“Why don’t you get warmer clothes then?” He hissed at her “Jeez, why am I supposed to
be kind and caring all of a sudden”

Valentina burst out crying. “Why does nobody ever do anything for me ever since mum got killed? She sobbed. Her tears stopped flowing as her eyes hardened and her claws came out. She aimed for Whitahkay’s right shoulder. Startled, he grabbed her wrist before she could do any damage. His reflexes had grown in the years of defending himself from the village boys. Valentina was quicker then those though. Valentina hissed her eyes turning into those of a cat.

Whitahkay threw a punch at Valentina, only to be blocked. Whitahkay jumped out of reach as Valentina swiped for him with her claws. Kit looked on in amusement. I have to show him thought Valentina I have to prove that I’m not just a weak little girl. It’s obvious that’s what he thinks. She dodged one of his attacks then spun round and scored a hit on his left shoulder. He tried not to show any sign of pain but it was in his eyes. Valentina reached into the small of her back, pulled out one of her throwing knives, and threw it, with aimed precision at Whitahkay’s calf. It hit it’s mark and he collapsed.

That should teach him Valentina thought. I feel like banana. Spotting the fruit that she had a sudden urge for, she walked over, her tail swinging, if possible, happily, in the air. Grabbing the banana, she peeled and ate the fruit. Kit suddenly leapt up, sword in hand. Recognising that a demon must be near by, Valentina stood by the injured Whitahkay. A lower class demon came raging out of the bushes. It had the form of deformed buffalo. Valentina grabbed her whip and held it with her tail. She wasn’t as skilled at using her whip with her tail, but she needed her hands free for her throwing knives and dagger. She took the throwing knife out of the small of her back with her right hand while she grabbed her dagger from it’s place on her leg with her left hand. Unconsciously, she stood with a stance between the demon and Whitahkay. She hadn’t known him very long, and though she had just fought with him, she counted him as friend. She protected her friends. She didn’t leave them to stand on their own.

Kit lifted her sword above her head. Leaping at the demon, she sliced it’s head off in a clean stroke. It’s lifeless body fell to the ground, blood oozing from the gaping hole on it’s shoulders. Kit swiftly leapt sideways, as to avoid being sprayed by the blood.

Valentina stood motionless the whole time, not moving from between the demon and Whitahkay. He was her friend after all, and she was the one who injured him, she felt compelled to protect him. Her logic was slightly twisted but she didn’t want him dead. Just not thinking that she was a pathetic half-breed.

Valentina stared down at Whitahkay, her compassion subsiding into another wave of anger. She glared at him, had learnt his lesson but he still hadn’t come to realize how screwed up his mind and way of thinking was. I made something of my life, even when nobody ever accepted me. Valentina thought why can’t he just do the same thing? He just stop being an immature thing and grow up! ERG! I AM SO SICK OF PEOPLE THINKING THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE BELOW THEM! Why can’t they just get over it?

With that she marched off and left Whitahkay kneeling on the ground.
“Kit” she said, her voice still had remaining traces of the anger.
“Yeah”
“I don’t know what to do with him”
“What do you mean?”
“Weeeeeellll, I jus’…” Valentina searched for the right way to say what her mind was thinking in a thousand different ways. Kit sat patiently as Valentina pulled faces in the strain of putting together a recognisable sentence.
“I, think he is trying to say, without saying it, that he is better then either of us.”
“Why do you say that?”
“He doesn’t treat me like I am worth anything”
“I tried to warn you” Kit said, suppressing a small smile. Valentina glared at her, standing up and walking past the bushes.

Valentina sat on a small tree stump, musing about how much she hated being treated as if she was worth nothing. It reminded her too much of her father. He had always blamed her for everything that went wrong with his life. Valentina sighed. Father was just the same.

Lost in her thoughts, Valentina missed the signs that something else was there. The small rustling of leaves. The scuffles of something moving. Small snorts. She missed it all.

Her ears perked up as she finally noticed the rustle of leaves. She squinted at the bushes. Another demon rushed out. Valentina made a small sound of surprise. Recovering her senses, she removed her whip from it’s holder, which was resting on her hip, faster then the human eye could see. She raised it and waited for the demon to attack. It complied immediately. She brought the whip down with a crack. It sliced across the demons chest.

Valentina smiled to herself at her accomplishment. The demon growled at her for wounding it. She hissed, her eyes had already changed and her claws come out. She grabbed a throwing knife chucking it squarely at where its heart should be. It hit, but did not touch any vital organs. It was injured though.

There was a slight noise behind Valentina and she spun round at the sound. Whitahkay was behind her, his sword drawn. Valentina frowned. She did not need or want his help. The demon took it’s chance while they were distracted, sending Valentina crashing to the ground. Whitahkay lunged forward, making a wide arc with his sword. He missed, allowing the demon to land a blow to the stomach. Whitahkay hit the floor.

Valentina took the time to her advantage, drawing her dagger. She waited for the demon to rush at her, bracing herself. It lunged. Valentina held her dagger out, it plunged into the demon’s chest. A fatal blow. It came crashing to the ground. Valentina reclaimed the throwing knife and dagger that was imbedded in the demon’s chest.

Walking over to Whitahkay, Valentina held out her hand. He had tried to help her. She appreciated that.
“Wanna hand?”
