I seem to be drawing a lot lately, hmmm?

This is referenced off of my all-time favorite photograph, taken by Al Chang.

That is the original photograph. The one I half-referenced off of, however, was a picture of a picture in a gallery at the U.S. Military Museum, and was no where as high quality as that.

What is "half-referenced", you ask? Well then, let me tell you a little story:

Once upon a Christmas, I got a tiny, but awesome-sauce notebook with a tiny, but awesome-sauce pen from an awesome-sauce friend, which I brought with me to Hawai'i, and drew in every chance I got. Well, after I saw the photograph in the gallery, I said to myself and everyone who gave a damn, "I have got to draw that photo." So I borrowed a friend's camera and took a picture of it, to reference later. Later, I took that tiny notebook out of my pocket, turned on the camera, and drew the entire picture with the pen. That's right, pen. And it turned out just as good as the pencil drawing above, too.
Well, just my luck, that night the entire island of Oahu had a blackout. Apparently the central generator had gotten struck by lightning (what are the chances?). In the confusion, I lost that notebook. I know. I suck. But if you're reading this, Ryuuko-senpai, can you tell me where to get another one? Pleease? My pocket feels empty without it.
Anywho, I had brought my official sketchbook along with me on the trip so I sat down, borrowed the camera again, and began to redraw. Of course, I had already wasted most of the battery the last time I drew it, and I only managed to get the basic outline down before it ran out of battery. So while I sat in the unmoving line at the airport (no electricity = hand checked bags, pat-downs, the whole bit), I filled in most of the detail from memory. When I got home, she sent me the pic via email, and so I filled in the rest.

Well, it's the first time I've ever done anything so, well, realistic. I'd really appreciate comments.

Tip of the Day - If you want to improve your memory and exercise your attention to detail, try drawing with a pen. You won't believe how much more focused you become when you realize you can't erase.
