Chapter one

The hot breath grazed my neck. But it had no source, no lungs to exhale from. There was just the moldy, must room. I rubbed the spot, my heart racing, what was that. Slowly, as if afraid of what I might see, I survived the room; no one was there. Exhaling a shaky breath I moved on, this is what we came for, the thrill and mystery of the dead.
“Guys” I said weakly.
The others turned to face me.
“I just felt a…breath on the back of my neck”
Didier’s face lit up, he had suggested this, breaking into the old Kurokon house and looking for its ‘ghosts’. He was typical for his age, not so much tall as long, and his scruffy blond hair added to the effect. He always wore dark clothes, either with skulls, vampires, demons, or the logos of famous paranormal societies. I never believed in that stuff, but it did sound like fun.
“Probably just a cobweb” Robby snorted. He was the skeptic, he wouldn’t believe in a ghost if it danced naked in front of him. He was shorter then we and more built up. He always had a snooty look on his face, I don’t know how he manages to have friends, I guess you just have to look beyond that stupid look. His head was almost bald but tiny little hairs cover it like fuzz.
I thru him a nasty look “I know what I felt!”
Didier looked exited and began bombarding me with questions. Was it warm or cold? How long did it last? Things like that.
“Look it was just there okay, a hot breath” I groaned in exasperation.
Didier still looked ecstatic, but Robby just rolled his eyes.
“Let’s keep going!” he said happily.

We continued to walk thru the old house, it was humungous. We had been thru two hallways and about ten bedrooms. And there were still many rooms to see. Robby gasped and stared at the ballroom doors when we reached them. Didier looked as though he might explode. I stood toward the back, not wanting to enter the room. Silently the two of them pried the doors open revealing a pitch black room. It took our eyes a while to adjust, but when they did I almost screamed. Black figures were darting around the room and out thru other door ways. Didier ran after them while Robby and eye stared in horror. He seemed to lose his voice and beckoned us to fallow him in. Robby puffed up his chest a slowly walked in. I stood there watching them, my legs wouldn’t move, I didn’t want to go in there but I didn’t want to be left alone. Finally I forced myself into the dark hall, the room was surprisingly cold, and I could see my breath flutter before me.
“Shadow people” Didier smiled, very pale still. “Really common in this field”
Robby gave a ‘peh’ noise.
Annoyed I snorted “come on” and walked around the ball room. It was pitch black; the huge windows had been boarded up. I could faintly see the outlines of gold along the ceiling. Dusty outlines of were paintings had hung still apparent even in this darkness. My eyes began to adjust and I was absently staring around the room. It must have been great in its time but now was just a very large cobweb shelf. Bending over, I wiped dust off the old floor, I examined the tile work, and it was wonderful. I looked up, searching for my friends. Didier was still explaining ‘shadow people’ to Robby. I wandered over to them.
“Well” Didier grinned at me “what do you think Adam?”
I thought back to the figures, there had been too many to count, and it was like someone had pressed fast forward when they ran, it was blurred and too quick for the eye to fallow. They were so dark as well, even for shadows, the blackest of blacks.
I slowly nodded at Didier, “this place is weird”.
Robby scoffed and walked over to the place where the shadows had been before they darted away. He bent over and looked at the floor.
“Adam! Diddy! Come here!”
We both ran over. When he came into view he was examining something imprinted in the dust. A footprint! There were a lot, and they all branched off in the direction that the figures had gone.
“Those things were solid?!* Didier cried.
“See” Robby said “I told you, no ghosts. Probably just some idiots from school playing a prank on us”.
“But” I said, really afraid now “no human can move that fast”.
They were both silent now, Robby was obviously thinking and Didier was looking pale.
Finally Didier’s face snapped to mine, an evil grin on his face
“Let’s fallow them” he grinned.
“NO!” Robby said “this is stupid, if you want to go chasing some unknown monsters into the dark go ahead! Im going home.”
He began to storm off, neither Didier nor I made a motion to stop him. It was pointless to, he was really stubborn.
Didier looked at me again, as if asking if I would fallow the figures. I grinned and nodded.

We fallowed the dusty tracks as best we could but they were faint and it was so dark. So we stopped to rest in an old study. I felt the breath on my neck again and froze, it lasted much longer, right along the right side of my neck. Instinctively my eyes snapped to see what was attacking me, but there was nothing there.
“What’s wrong” Didier asked.
I rubbed the spot on my neck “n-nothing, ju-just the breath again.”
Didier didn’t grin like I expected him too his face went pale, and soon I understood why, there was a massive shadow figure over him, its hands on his shoulder.
“Suh-Somethings touching me” he said in a shaky voice. I nodded slowly. His face was the whitest I’ve ever seen it, I think he was going to faint.
His voice hit a new octave, high pitched and full of fear “you…you can see it….cant you”. I nodded again
He slowly looked up and as he did the figure bent over and…breathed on him. I was a little shocked at first, but then horror as Didier passed out. The figure lingered over him for a moment then looked up at me. I found my legs and leaped from the chair running as fast as I could from the figure. I was sobbing with fear. I ran into a room and slammed the door, to hide in the darkness, Cold sweat dripping from my brow. I heard footsteps in the hallway and my body tensed. Not breathing I stared, wide eyed, into the darkness. Doors were opening and shutting. Its looking for me, I thought with despair. The door next to the room I was in creaked open then slammed shut. Then my door opened.
