Ch. 3

A few hours later, when night had fell, and the kingdom was asleep, a small chosen group followed the old king to an ancient tunnel. He was the only one who knew of it, and how to get to the outlands. Once at the end, he opened a portal, and they all ran threw.
Once threw, the old king told the group to go into the forest, and that he would meet up with them in just a bit. He then turned towards a light and ran towards it. An outland town. He sniffed the air a bit, and then cautiously approached on of the houses.
He prayed that his instincts were right, and he set his small grandson on the step, with a note. He then knocked, and took off to the shadows to watch from a safe distance.
The door opened. It was a large mountain lion female that answered. She saw the cub, and her eyes immediately softened. She gently picked up the small and helpless cub and read the note.
“Please…take good care of our son. He is a good cub. His name is Bane.”
The lioness smiled, held Bane close, and carried him inside. She then called for her mate. The male mountain lion stared at his mate with wonder as she explained what had just happened. After a moment, he spoke.
“Eartha, we can’t keep him. We have to take him to an orphanage.
“No”, replied Eartha, “You know how I feel about those places, Chase.”
Chase looked at his mate and sighed, knowing he had lost this one.
“Fine, we’ll keep him. But how are you going to explain that he’s not a cougar?”
“Chase, I was adopted myself, by a whole family of wolves, remember. I think we’ll be fine. Now let’s make this little angel a bed.”
Chase rose, and gathered up some blanket and a pillow, and set them in front of the fireplace. Eartha brought the cub over and set him down on the pillow, and tucked the blankets around him. Both watched as the cub slept, but it was Chase who noticed the strange mark on the cub’s arm. He grinned. He had a unique son.

Ch. 2

A few hours later, the old king went to visit Thorafax, the first dragon, and his most trusted advisor. As he opened the door to Thorafax’s chamber, he heard a voice. “Ah, my king, it is always a great honor to have you visit. But I sense there is a great deal on your mind. Come in, my friend, I have a warning for you.”
Typhon walked over to the old dragon. He was larger than most, and a dark gray color, and had eyes that were milky white with age. Typhon swallowed and spoke,
“A warning, you say?”
“Yes, great one. The ancestors have told me that soon we must return to the outlands, and that there will be a great war. They also told me that your two grandchildren are in great danger from Stoorworm. He carries great malice for young Bane, and cares not for his own son. If they are to live, you must take them and flee. Take some of your warriors, and their families, as well as some of your artisans. Live in secret near an outland town. Keep Stoorworm’s son with you, but Bane must be kept hidden from our world until his 25th birthday. On the night of the new moon he will rejoin us, but f you are to save him, you must go now.”
Typhon felt his heart shatter. His own son would turn on him, he was sure. He would have to break Akita’s heart to save Bane. Who would care for him in the outlands? As he pondered this he ran to his son’s chamber.
“My son, I must leave the kingdom,” he hissed. He told his son of Thorafax’s warning, and after a moment of anguish, it was Akita who spoke.
“If what you say is true, and will keep my Bane safe, then you must go.”
She went over to her son, and saw that he was asleep. She scooped him up, and gently placed him into a woven basket, and wrapped a warm blanket around him. His father then took off the red amulet from his neck, and placed it in the basket with his son.
“Be safe, my son, my prince of dragons.”

Ch. 1~ Beginning

Hidden away in the mountains, was a kingdom of dragons, forgotten by the modern world. There, the dragons lived and ruled themselves with a monarchy style of government. They lived in peace.
And on one dark night, the birth of a prince was announced. It was the kings first born. The king, a large silver and gold dragon, stood next to his mate, who lay in a large nest-like bed. On the bed lay a grayish-brown she-wolf. He climbed onto the bed and pulled his mate and newborn son close.
After a while, he spoke. “Akita, he’s beautiful, perfect. My father will be pleased. But what shall we call him?”
The mother remained silent for a few moments as she thought, then replied in a warm voice, “We’ll call him Bane. He will carry it with pride, and one day, he will be king.”
Even though their son was half dragon, from his father, he looked like an ordinary wolf pup. He would not show any signs of being half dragon until he was in his twenties.
Suddenly, the door to their chamber crashed open. Standing there was a large black dragon. He walked into the room, displeasure was clearly written all over his face. “Brother, how dare you break the ancient law. That…that thing is an abomination. It must be destroyed at once!”
“No! He is my son, and he will treated as such. You are not the king, I am, and are in no such position to command me.”
“No, he isn’t. But I am, son.”
Both dragons turned to see a large red dragon, their father, Typhon. He turned to the black dragon. “Stoorworm, as I remember, I did not choose you as my successor. So I will decide whether or not the child dies.”
The old king went over to the mother and child, and looked at the wolf-dragon cub.
“Ah, he will make a fine prince. What is his name?”
“Bane,” said Akita, “it is a name that comes from my clan.”
Stoorworm, angry at being dismissed in such a way, over a hybrid cub, stormed out of the room, and vowed to have his vengeance soon enough. He would kill his brother, and father, along with the abomination. Then he would be able to take the throne, and be king.

How Cats Got Their Markings

Long ago, in the beginning, cats had no markings. Their fur was colored, but lacked spots or strips or any sort of thing. But when day, when Lion and Lioness, Cheetah and Leopard were meeting as they always did, Cheetah announced that he had an idea.

He told them of the hyenas and giraffes he had seen, and how they were covered in wonderful spots. So why shouldn't they have spots as well. So Chhetah and Leopard each grabbed a stick, and proceeded to have a great deal of fun flinging the mud at one another. Lion decided to just watch. What need did he have of spots when he had is beautiful mane.

But when Cheetah and Leopard flopped down, exhausted, Lion couldn't tell them apart. But Lioness came up with an idea. For Leopard, she altered his spots to look like eyes, and for Cheetah, drew tear marks down his face. After that, the group then parted, but promised to meet again soon.

And they did often meet, but they never did notice, that hidden in the trees behind them, was Tiger. He wanted to join them, but his shyness held him back. But more than anything, he was jealous of them. His fur was so plain. He loved Cheetah and Leopard's spots. Why, even Lion was plain, with his magnificent mane.

But during one meeting, Lioness was sitting apart, relaxing, when she saw a spot of bright orange off in the trees. Slowly, she silently stalked over, and pounced. And landed on Tiger! The shock froze him, which allowed the others to approach.

Cheetah and Leopard were extatic to find another cat. They went over to sniff him, and Cheetah was the first to notice how plain he was. Tiger told them about how much he loved their spots. So cheetah and Leopard each snatched up a stick. They loved having their spots, so if Tiger wanted some as well, he should have them too.

But just before they could start, Lioness stopped them. Tiger started to plead with her, he so wanted spots. But she hushed him, declaring that she had a better idea. She took Cheetah's stick, dipped it into the mud, then drew a line down Tiger's back. Then along his sides, face, legs and tail.

Cheetah and Leopard sat back, amazed. Stripes, they realized. And did they ever look good on Tiger. Lioness sat back, purring. Proud with her work. Tiger went over to the river to see what she had done.

But Cheetah and Leopard still thought he should have some spots of some kind. So they each grabbed a stick, and on each ear, made a spot.

And still to today, the marking have stayed.
