Do Devils cry?

~Devil may cry~

Studio: Capcom

Year: 2008

Episodes: 12

An anime made over a video game… Can it be good? Well we shall have to see it more in detail. As you are all familiar, usually animes based on a movie end up pretty bad. But what about those of video games…

The anime starts in a standard DMC fashion. Dante comes in and after some jokes starts kicking those demons around. Now, the first two things that you will probably notice are the music and the lack of that DMC feel. The music is just fantastic, no doubts about that. From the opening one which is made in a style of heavy metal, to all others which are heavy or progressive which have similar (though not exact) style as from the games.

About that feeling that video games had and that is not present here, is what we are talking about next. It is different… But, still it remains. The main things are that here are just so many characters and all of them have separate stories which spawn from 2nd to 10th episode, leaving only three, four episodes of the main storyline. They act as fillers, though they actually are not. And Dante here looks a lot more serious than he usually is. He is still making all kinds of jokes and all, but I guess the main thing is that part of his change after the first DMC. Overall, they still made him kick ass like he really is.

The story overall is good, and it helps to connect all the missing parts between the first and the fourth parts of video games. We even get to see actions with Trish and Lady, which is always a nice plus. Not so much about action, since Dante takes care of mostly demons with ease, but it is always made in style like it should be. Talking about style, they could make it a lot better and to add more weapons and known demons. But I guess they rushed it a little and hopefully it still looked decent at the end.
The graphics are in realistic anime style, kinda similar to Death Note, just with more effects. It is nicely done and it is very fluent, so no mistakes in that.

Overall, an anime is quite good and it is not overly long. Recommended to everyone, especially DMC fans, though they might be a little disappointed. But anyway, still fun to watch.

Animations and drawings: 9/10
– This was made by Capcom… Is it possible to be bad?
Sounds and effects: 9/10 – Again, just amazing. You can’t go wrong with this music.
Story: 8/10 – Not something that you would look forward to see, but still very interesting.
Entertainment: 8.5/10 – If you can get into this anime, you will finish it in no time
Overall: 8/10 – a good action packed anime, which could have become an even bigger hit

The anime is very similar to Hellsing in terms of action and plot
