Family Marks

Gate inhabitants bear a marking known as a "family mark" somewhere on their bodies (usually where most visible, like on the face or hands). This native custom was adopted by the Gates' settlers during colonization. Many natives valued their village over individual families, so they would identify themselves by their village's name. Family marks came into use as a means to identify the bloodlines within the village.
