Does the Church Sponsor Schools?

Our first question was sent from Tsubusa no Neko.

Q: Are there schools that are sponsered by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, i.e. how there are Lutheran primary schools, or Catholic high schools?

A: yes. There are three branches (four if you count the one in Jerusalem) of Brigham Young University: there's one in Idaho at the former site of Ricks College, which was also a Church-sponsored school, one in Provo, Utah, and another in Hawaii. In addition, there is also the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, which is an open-enrollment school. All of these schools have certain requirements to get in, but all of them require an Eccliastical Endorsement (I think that's what it's called), which is basically a reccommendation from a bishop or seminary teacher.

On the high school level, most public high schools in the US have a Seminary program for students 9th grade and up, which is a non-credit class during the day where each year one of the standard works is studied. For example, this year we're studying the Old Testament, and next year we will study the New Testament, the Book of Mormon after that, and then Doctrine and Covenants. Some schools have an early morning Seminary, and while many schools have a Seminary building just outside campus, some, like my old junior high school, will hold the classes at a Church meetinghouse if there is one within walking distance of the school.

As kind of a "higher level" of Seminary, most colleges and universities also offer an Institute program. In this course, students study the standard works of scripture, much like in Seminary, but more in-depth. There are also more social programs than Seminary, such as dances that they sponsor every month. In fact, my old Seminary teacher, Brother Farlee, met his wife at one of said dances, and he's not the only one.
